What we did before the internet
« on: November 28, 2021, 12:12:01 pm »
People today are really lucky when it comes to getting information that you need. The info is all but a click away. From how nuclear power plants work to playing a song.

I remember more than 30 years ago rewinding the tape over and over at first and then recording the section i need in a loop.

Brave new world we live in now.

Getting info is easier but at the same time i would suspect it is making people, how shall i put it, stupid as they are not even trying to remember stuff. Not when you can google it and have it in a second or two.

You have a point, pib.

At work, in those long past days before work-from-home, there were times when I spotted people reaching for their phone to perform what I considered to be the most basic of arithmetical sums. And some days just couldn't resist making a facetious comment.

Warm welcome to the Forum.
Began the adventure Dec 2016 expecting little, achieved more than I imagined, and now I'm a happy advancing beginner

Could not agree more Pinky (welcome btw).

The other downside is that as the speed of information availability is so rapid, folks expect their learning paths to be equally as quick. And alas that element has not changed in 30 years and the rest. You need to be honest, diligent and patient, otherwise you'll be chasing a new hobby a few months down the line.

And David don't get me started on calculators. You know I am ex IT but back in the 70s we had to log everything that ran, idle time, down time, recovery time etc across the 3 shifts, 1440 minutes a day everyday. Around '79, we had a Maths grad start as a trainee op and when asked to add up the day's logs, ask me for a calculator. All he got was one of those glances !!

Your in safe hands Pinky, lots of helpful folk here to guide and assist.

Cheers

Toby

That will send me into a cold sweat if I go back to those days. Never did fathom slide rules but man those books.........................................do they still teach that stuff ??  8)
