How to remove a whammy bar? Yamaha Pacifica 112v enquiry
« on: October 11, 2021, 04:59:25 pm »
I have seen a guitar on ebay which looks like a good deal but had little information! I asked the seller for more information which he let me have but also noted that the guitar has a whammy bar, which was originally shown.

At the this point in time I'm not that bothered about a whammy bar (have other things to think about) so wanted to ask how easy it is to remove the bar, and hardtail it (is that the right term?) Is it easily done?

Any help appreciated.

It all depends on the type of bridge assembly and tremolo system.
Is it similar to a normal Strat type, Floyd Rose style, other?

Assuming Yamaha followed Fenders design, just spin it back anti clockwise and it will just fall out of the thread. Others may advised different but I would not worry too much about "hard tailing" it, or locking the trem. On both my strats I just wound them off and left them like that. Tuning has stayed stable and on my Affinity that's stable, over 25 years.

Cheers

In that case they are held in place by rotating - a screw / thread type mechanism. Then, loosen all strings. Then remove the plastic back plate and give the screws holding the spring cradle a little turn each to increase the tension which will in turn pull the bridge to the body - decking it. Don't over tighten the screws, a quarter at a time. Return strings to proper tuning and look at the bridge to see if it is against the body. If so - stop. If not, repeat.

Thanks for both replies. On this basis I'm going to go ahead. At the moment there are no bids and it's relatively local.

You might consider fully blocking your floating bridge, if you get this. Both my electrics have floating bridges and I don’t whammy  and likely never will. I have yet to get around to blocking them and set up is a pain. They hold tune fine, since I don’t stress them via a whammy bar, and not the end of the world, obviously, or they would have gotten blocked by now. It is just the fiddling bits of adjusting string vs bridge vs truss tension. Especially if you change string gauge.

Well what a strange auction that was. So I put a bid on (£100) with 8mins. to go, and watched the clock go down to zero only to find that I had been out bid by £2!!. Have to say was really surprised as I didn't get notified of the other bid, which I found out later was put on with 58secs to go. Oh well!

Was this eBay? I used to try eBay auctions, but this same type of thing happened so routinely, I don’t anymore. I think there is an underlying scam. Not sure it’s intent. Keep your eyes out for the same item to repost.

It was eBay. Crossed my mind that the seller bought it back himself as it wasn't going for more than the original price.

Ebay ?

Last bid go for an obscure amount like $e£1,27 and leave it to the last few seconds (based on your browsers normal response). Most folk  bid in the 1 2 5 10 15 ball park. Throw some curve balls. £7.77, £10.2 £3.07 £6.66, you'll be surprised how predictable folks bid. Go random, go weird. I don't do a lot of ebay these day from a bidding war perspective but in the early days when I was back in the UK, I lost out a lot by bidding uniformly. A guy at work (well my boss at one point) that used the buy and sell old Dinky and Corgi cars said, most buys came in on random number type bids (as above) and he'd do something similar when buying, for a far better success rate. My 2 cents. Got some good gear that way, lost some good gear on vanilla bidding.

Cheers

Toby

The thing that I found really odd was that there were no other bits (or watchers) until the auction closed and it went for £102. The bid at 58secs. didn't show during the auction. Looked a bit fishy to me.
