Playing Indie-Rock
« on: April 03, 2021, 02:42:14 pm »
Hey, my name is Ralf, I'm 52 years old, from Germany and an advanced beginner on the (electric) guitar. I love 90s indie rock (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, Mudhoney, Nirvana, Tocotronic etc.) and current (Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile etc.). I'm looking for like-minded people around the world to exchange songs, ideas about bands, sounds and gear and maybe even jam together. If not live, then via "Zoom" or recordings (e.g. GarageBand). I look forward to your answers and a lively exchange.

Hey hey,

hello from Belgium! 46 years here and still going.  ;D
I love those band you mentioned too. (not all are known to me (i've never listened to Dinosaur Jr or Toccotronic, at least, not that i know  ;D), but 90's indie rock is a favourite of mine).
But what i don't know yet, i can get to know.

I like the ideas you propose, so where do you suggest we start?

I'll get it in the end. Just don't give up, that's the key....

Hej, great the quick answer. Which songs are you currently working on? I'm currently learning "State of love and trust" from Pearl Jam and "On fire" from Sebadoh. My goal is to learn and understand songs that I love. Then I'd like to find alternative ways to play these songs to develop my own style. But also to find ways to play songs with two guitars.
Maybe we can take a song (maybe a song of Nirvana) and talk about how we play it, how to create the sound and what possibilities there are to work with it. Also with the help of recordings with GarageBand.

Hello. Sorry for the late reply.
I don't always check the forum as often as i should.  ???

Right now, i'm playing catch up with myself.  :D I recently came out of a year's hiatus. (Due to several reasons).
But i'm back at practice and i have a plan to go with it.

Atm, i'm learning Layla. But i'm open for suggestions.
I've  learned to play Polly so that's something to start with, i guess.
I'll get it in the end. Just don't give up, that's the key....

Hej, no problem. As you see, I also don‘t check the news daily. I think Polly is a good song to start with. There is a lesson by Justin but also a lot of material like backing tracks and sound settings. Do you know, if it is possible to send soundfiles within this forum, or should we send them via mail. Do you also have some ideas for a good start?

Afaik there's no way to send sound files via the forum.

Via mail could work just fine i guess, providing they're not too big.

I've learned to play Polly with the lesson that Justin did about this song. It's been a while since i've played that song, but it's good starting point.

Where should we start? I suggest we start with a recording of Polly (i just bought myself an ai and mic, along with Ardour for the daw. I'm getting to grips with it, so i could send you a recording later on.)
That way, you know where i stand, and where we could go from there.

What do you think?

I'll get it in the end. Just don't give up, that's the key....

Lol.

Don't expect too much. I'm more of a beginner than something else.

But we have to start somewhere, so it'll be a start anyhow.
