Maiden Voyage 2021
« on: January 16, 2021, 07:50:10 pm »
Ok so I keep saying I need to get my game together and get off this darned plateau. Well new year new broom what ever the saying is but it calls for a more focused practice routine and some target songs to hit hopefully this year.

So a little taster but be warned there are a whole bunch of warts, as I have not tried these for years and long before I turned up here. Its just raw DI via the Mustang III using the Marshal 59SLP bit of 'Verb, Delay. Lots to sort out in that department.

MV II  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uKrbQO7ZPY_0kGspRhOJkNLPX_KQ2GMv/view?usp=sharing
MV III  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GRCt7-4sAucVM43rrfw6yj00ymgfUG6L/view?usp=sharing

Anyone who guesses the tracks gets a free Jamboree bag.  ;D ;D Anyone who remembers what a Jamboree bag is gets another free. Simples  8)

I am not afraid of the dark Toby :D. Well done, keep em coming 8)! Looking forward to following your progress on these tunes.

No clue what a Jamboree bag is :D.

EDIT:
I am trying to figure out the other two. Was tempted to say Aces High but might not be. Will return soon!

I'll be blowed if I can remember which order I did them in but yep FOTD is one for sure, as for the others keep digging and no that's not a clue.

A Jamboree bag was a, well yes a bag full of teeth rotters and some carp toyish thing back in the midst of time. The same old poop is probably still out there but under a different name. I can offer Marathon bars or Opal fruits as an alternative ?  8)

Mrs C and me remember Jamboree bags - or lucky bags.

There were other bags ... tuppeny mix or if you were minted a ten-penny mix.

Don't know the MV tracks.
I knew the 1st Maiden album and saw them at Middlesbrough Town Hall 1980 with Paul Di'Anno as lead vocalist.
I honestly haven't played a full album through after then for whatever reason.

Well you and the missus win a virtual Jamboree bag for just recognising their existence but I'll let you off as far as 'Maiden is concerned.  Not quite ventured back to the days of Di'Anno but still some great tracks from those early days. Must have seen them around 6 or so times, last time was a 3 generation gig in Sheffield.

When my granddaughter was about 4 she would ask who mummy and papa were playing in the car and we used to say its Uncle Bruce. She frequently asked if Uncle Bruce could come to her birthday parties. Refer to my previous post about corrupting your kids at an early age !!

Dance of Death or Hallowed Be Thy Name maybe?

Okay, now I better stop guessing and really dig into Iron Maiden discography!

Jamboree bag aka big bag of suck! Penny chews, flying saucers, shrimps, fruit salad, blackjacks, kali dips - serious tooth rot stuff, no wonder the school dentist rubbed his hands together when he saw that stuff!
The tracks, no idea it’s too late for my brain to function properly 😂

Good vibes for you my friend ... for being intentional and putting it out there.

Look forward to the continuing of the Madman Making Music in 2021. I'll be equally engaged by more diary entries leading into an acoustic performance or hard rocking covers.

I took a listen to the samples. Enjoyed all the melodies. No clue on the songs. I gather that at least one was Iron Maiden. I don't think I have ever listened to a studio album start-to-finish ... the way IMHO it should be done, rather than just the song or two pushed out as singles, but I digress ... but used to listen through to the live album (had to check the title  :-[ ) Live After Death every now and then, even played it in the car with my son, as part of his indoctri...education ... he never especially liked IM but does love AC/DC and Sabbeth, so I did OK on the harder side. He also enjoys George Thorogood, so appreciates bluesy rock 'n roll, but I digress again.

Listening the samples, I had to fight the itch to turn from my path and learn some licks, leads, and songs on the electric. And then I remembered Master Justin's guidance to be focussed and I'll remain focused on my current path ... but one day, I am sure I will re-focus and work on the other side of Neil Young, the Crazy Horse side and my LP is patiently awaiting that day.

Anyhow, enough of my random waffle ... rock-on Toby, and keep us posted as you go  8)

After navigating through the discography like a ghost, I think I'm missing only one more 8). Let the hunt for the last virtual Jamboree bag continue!

On a more serious note:
Tunes are recognisable, so you're on a good path!

@Darrell - All manner of dodgy stuff sold by those corner shops back in the day. Bag of that stuff and you'd be bouncing of the walls and ceiling all day.  ;D

@David - You can always have a little dabble on the side, just don't get distracted. In fact that why these are part of the master plan. To get even one of these down I will need to really get sorted and finish the Blues Lead for all the licks to develop fluidity and get down and dirty with my sloppy legato. On top of that accurate picking and speed for the power chord rhythms, let alone learning to gallop. So By focusing on those and other skills, these will become more achievable. "Madman and The Acoustic" is still out there but having some timing issues on the latest project but its getting there. So watch this space.

@GLP- That is some darn fine detective work. Brave New World is a great album and I love that into but it all goes pear shaped after that. As you have been so dogged in hunting these down, I'll give you a little clue, in a reversed Monopoly quote. Go To Go do not pass Jail................ie back to where you started.
If that helps and you get it I am afraid I will have to post links to the OTs but great you are actually recognizing what I am playing !! Anyway at least you are getting to play plenty of Maiden which I hope is well cranked. Good Hunting.  8)

3 out of 3

Have a well deserved prize :)

As for the originals, I can play odd sections of all of them, especially the two FOTD album tracks but lots of work is needed and some of it will need simplifying for my clumsy mitts !! It will be a long term project.

Anyway, for those still scratching their heads ..........

PG - there's a naughty word in one of the Rio clips.

Afraid To Shoot Strangers

Ghost of the Navigator

Fear of the Dark

It will also give me some incentive with my singing course but will be tough to emulate Mr D.  8)

Went rummaging around in the loft today and found some road maps...........

Thought I had the Fear of the Dark album songbook as well but found some additional inspiration, in The Beatles 62-70 and Clapton Chronicles These have all been gathering dust for at least 20 years (although DoD was picked up around 2004), so it darned time they got put to use. Left another half dozen or so up there for now.

All part of the master plan, just need to stick with it. Simples.  8)

Nice! Very expressive playing. I have to say that I liked the 3rd track best -- it had a spaghetti western vibe to it. I hope that doesn't come off as a knock. It's close to dinner time here and I like to watch westerns. :)

LOL Another opportunity for me to practice mimicy when reciting segments of that sketch. Which is good prep for repeating Boycott witty cricket comments about grannies batting with stick a rhubarb  ;D

Seriously, agreed ... a wee dabble is fine. Though in the back of my mind is the notion that my actual practice these days is far too close to a brief dabble, and most time is spent playing and singing songs, songs, songs ...

Sure you will have fun working on these projects and look forward to updates in due course.

Oh and I noticed you had the song book for my favourite Beatles albums  ::)

Toby, your little foray into the loft to see what forgotten gems were there prompted me to go look in ours, hmmm some interesting little gems turned up! Cassette tapes of Pete and Dud, Rory Gallagher, King Crimson, Captain Beefheart, ELP, and a few others! Slight problem, nothing to play them on..... oh well looks like seeing if there are any around on Flea bay 😜😜😜

Sure they were 5s. I started on Capstan Full Strength aged 9 but moved on No6 in 10s when I started my paper round. :o

Jason thanks, yes it was the Mustang III. I have 3 or 4 Maiden FX I got hold before Fuse was shut down. Still not sure which one I will use for each song. Plus in messing around with this and not being happy of how things sounded in Reaper, realised I had taken bad advice of just cabling up the left stereo line out in to the Q802. So I double up the XLRs and bang big difference !! There quite a few other Maiden sections I can play from messing around in a previous life but its about time I worked them into some complete songs. May take all year or longer for just one but, its in the plan.  8)
