What Are You Watching? (Music Related)
« on: January 07, 2021, 07:02:21 pm »
As I get back into guitars I have found I am bagging my "normal" lock down binging and looking for more music and guitar related stuff.  Here's what I've watched lately. How about you?

Cadillac Records - The Chess Records story (movie).  Etta James, Howling Wolf, Chick Berry and BB King feature.  Didn't "love" the movie but is was worth a watch.

Alligator Records - Documentary about Alligator records.  I thought this really good in terms of understanding the Chicago Blues scene and development of the Blues in the north. To Be honest Elvin Bishop was the only artist I knew. Lots of live performances of Alligator Artists.

The Dirt - I call this a Documovie - It's a movie about Motley Crue with actors but produced by Motley Crue themselves. I felt they really didn't a good job being honest (in reflection) about their careers and opened up about a lot of things they did.  I don't think they have "regrets" but they recognize they were a pretty out of control band in the 80's. OK - They were totally out of control - LOL... Nice to see the perspective of their manager and record label rep played out as well.

What are you watching?

Music related - recently caught Echoes in the Canyon - great documentary about the early days of "folk rock" in California in the 60s.

Other - annual binges through Band of Brothers and Lord of the Rings.

Recovering from knee replacement surgery gives me lots of time on the couch with new parlour guitar!
Remember when the music came from wooden boxes strung with silver wire...

I’ve been watching this:

And these young Irish ladies busking, they’re in for this years Irish busking competition and one of the favourites!

And an old friend of mine who I used to see at Open mic nights near Bristol

I think this is a great cover and showing her talent very well!

A few documentary style movies I've enjoyed over the last few months, most on youtube if memory serves.

it might get loud - explores the careers and musical styles of prominent rock guitarists Jimmy Page, the Edge, and Jack White.

restrung - about a guy who dropped out of a career with Disney to make high end bass guitars

acoustic uprising - A film exploring the innovative world of modern Acoustic FingerStyle

making a guitar - beautiful film about luthier Michael Greenfield, which follows a number of guitars through his workshop (amazon prime)

keith richards - the influence, cracking and intimate portrait of the great man (netflix)

rush - beyond the lighted stage, not a rush fan but this documentary is fantastic (netflix i think)

the other one - profile of bob weir of grateful dead fame

Not everyone’s taste but this guy was a genius and left us way too early, Alan Holdsworth, fascinated by his music and playing!

This week I watched the Van Halen story. (I saw those guys at a backyard party in like 1974-5?) I musta been like 13 or 14...

I started watching Blood, frets and tears. Trying to amalgamate the experience and career of several guitarists - I keep falling asleep on the couch - LOL...

Same thing with the SRV story - I've watched the first half twice...

Just watched this and glad I did - Really easy story telling style...

https://www.justinguitar.com/guitar-lessons/justin-s-guitar-journey-early-years-bl-002

Would love to know what got him back and forth to Oz (Dad's work?).  My mum was an Aussie from Launceston (WWII bride) and I lived in Oz from like 68-69 through 75... A lot of my brothers and sisters are still there..

Getting caned and knuckled brought back (bad) memories - LOL... I used to get ruler smacked (knuckled) a lot by (usually) old female teachers for penmanship... The "men" mostly the principal did the formal caning.
