Well, the "fancy things" on the Katana 50 and the 100 are mostly the same. The only major differences (other than the power output) are the FX send/return connectors, more patch memories, and ability to use the GA-FC footswitch.

Of course, the weight is a big factor, and it makes sense from that point of view.

The good news is, the Katana  50 and 100 being, basically, identical from settings point of view means that anyone with a Katana 100 can help you too, so add me to that list (although I have the MkI version, and the MkII has a few additional capabilities).

Cheers,

Keith

You're well named Sir Majik, thankyou so very much. As I read your first paragraph I realised I understood every word. Wooo go me  ;D  The foot switch is the thing that would be too much for me. I have enough to coordinate with playing and singing.

Good decision Maggie. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Easy to get a good sound without all the fancy things and you can even dial some of those in easily from the panel.

Yay Maggie, I think you won't regret your decision. Just to be one step ahead Katana won't provide you with any cables except power leads. Both cable between your guitar and amp which is obviously jack male both ends and a belkin cable to connect your amp to a pc you will have to purchase before you are all ready to go. Here is the latter one as an example, I think I have a 2m one which allows me to put my laptop on a parapet, you can get 3m ones too if you need to.

https://images.app.goo.gl/eRjpD54MpARLb4WS7

If you ever need a footswitch (however even during gigs if you don't need to change effects during a song you can use laptop or tablet with usb instead, something like Microsoft Surface Pro) you can get an FS6 controller that allows you to switch between 4 preset effects, see video below:

https://youtu.be/Wqu82m2Pf00

The only big difference is you can't modify effects during gigs with FS6, you can only use presets. Same applies to expression pedal - either FS6 or expression pedal can be connected at once, not both at the same time.

Hi Maggie, I’ve got the Katana 50 mk1 and have had it for 2 years now. It’s never even been connected to a pc or the internet. It’s as it came out the box so you needn’t worry about ‘fancy things’. I’ve downloaded patches onto a tablet and used them to create different amp sounds but most of them are pretty poor as one persons idea of Dire Straits or AcDc etc is different to another's.
I also managed to load a virus into it doing this (it came from a well known patch site) and after a panic when all the lights came on and nothing worked, I followed the Katana instruction manual and did a ‘system reset’. So be bit careful if you do this.

To be honest I just use the basic amp settings for my also very basic needs. However I know it is capable of much more.

Any regrets? Mine is in the corner of the lounge and it is very ‘ampy’ looking, ie. a black box. I may change it in the future for one that is more ‘lounge friendly’ but of course that has nothing to do with its capabilities as an amp.

It’s a terrific amp for the money. You’ll be very happy I’m sure.

Just to say, I would be surprised if it was a virus in the conventional sense (a deliberately crafted malware that spreads from system to system). It was probably just an accidentally corrupted configuration file that messed something up in the Katana. Not good, of course, but also not really "a virus". You won't be seeing "Norton AV for Boss Katana" any time soon. ;)

Cheers,

Keith

Yes I’m sure you’re correct Keith, I was using the term virus loosely.

Good call Maggie, are you already buying cables too or waiting until your new gear arrives?

As one of my roles on this thread appears to involve being AR, I'm going to be picky again...

Both cable between your guitar and amp which is obviously jack male both ends and a belkin cable to connect your amp to a pc.

It's not actually a "belkin cable". Belkin are just one (of many) manufacturers of cables. The cable is actually USB type A to type B cable.

It's a pretty standard cable used to connect USB printers and other things, so there's a chance Maggie already has one. I actually have enough of these that I have a dedicated box for them in my garage.

I get the impression that Maggie won't be diving into Boss Tone Studio for a bit anyway.

Cheers,

Keith

Sorry just tried to be helpful, and yes my bad I gave a wrong description of the cable here, I should have put a printer cable, I always get mixed up with all those names for different connection ends!

No need to apologise. I did say I was being picky.

Be careful with us "oldies" calling it a printer cable.  This is what printer cables looked like in the '80s - LOL

I think it plugged into the "LPT" port on the computer and likely ran a dot matrix printer - LOL...

Good point. These old ones were "parallel" or "Centronics" printer cables. We also had "serial" cables with a 25-pin D type on both ends. I know them very well as I used to work in a computer shop, and probably sold thousands of them back in the day.

The USB type A to B cables are probably best known for being used on printers, but also are common on audio interfaces and digital mixers, MIDI devices, etc.

Cheers,

Keith

This thread is increasingly fascinating and funny ;D

The amp is due to arrive January 28.

Keith and Adrian  I have two of the right cables and one of them is a Belkin.
Clint Keep doing what you do best you wild child
Keith You're right about my not diving into Tone Studio right away. I'm curious about it and will certainly learn how to use is. I hope you don't get lost in any of those cables boxes you have  ::)
Keith "As one of my roles on this thread appears to involve being AR" What does AR mean?  Augmented Reality? I live there quite often.
Darrell Headphones for this chicken till I can play better.

For the next month or so I'm dividing my learning time between guitar and all that entails, PMT,  learning some more about using Reaper or at least not forgetting what I learned last year, exploring the sounds the amp makes without Tone Studio and another course I'm doing.
