"Band" Rehearsal
« on: October 07, 2020, 11:14:12 am »
So for a little light relief I videoed our "band" practice last night. Band might be stretching it a little but it'll do for now. Anyway here are our first three songs - Dont You Forget About Me, Mystify and Band Moon Rising.

Apologies for the quality! need to do something with the lighting/camera settings and the audio is just as captured on the camera which is a cheap GoPro Clone.

Anyway enjoy! and if you want some more I have more to edit and upload.

Part Two now uploaded - featuring Tainted Love, Why Does it Always Rain on Me, Shes Electric and Everybody Wants to Rule the World.

I did enjoy it, Jason ... good to see you able to connect with your mate face-face again and continue to rehearse.

You said "light relief" ... is that because you didn't include any Purple, Sabbeth, or Zeppelin :)

I will happily watch more of your in action.

Keep on rocking ...

That was a very enjoyable set to watch whilst having my mid morning coffee. I really liked the live vibe and your interactions with your mate. Well done Rossco. I don’t think you’ll be out playing gigs anytime soon but at least you can get together with one other person in your ‘studio’. Will a guitarist and drummer be next on the agenda?

Just a thought, can the Osmonds go out on the road? 😃

Cheers chaps for listening. We were very much ready to "hit the road" (well Open Mics) before COVID but have only got back into rehearsing again in the last 3-4 weeks.

Unfortunately David we have no Sabbeth, Purple or Zeppelin on the set list  ;D... its very much 80/90s pop at the minute. If I upload some more it'll get poppier I can assure you.

At the minute we're managing the drums with the Digitech Trio. I'd quite like a bigger band with at least a drummer but my mate has had issues in managing it all with more people in a previous band so I'm quite happy to stay as is for the time being. Plus it keeps it easy for arranging practice etc. Just means I have to put the drum tracks together.

LOL ... I was following the "light relief" theme.

I enjoy your repertoire.  My knowledge of 80/90s pop is not as good as some other eras and genres, I do regularly go back to listen to INXS Kick and have a Simple Minds compilation, which I enjoy.

And of course one can't call CCR 80/90s pop :) So perhaps you have more similar classics up your sleeve.

Look forward to more.

I too have had live playing at Open Mics curtailed and resorted to recording three song sets at as if at an OM to try to stay ready.

I usually just listen to the tracks, so I didn't realise there's no drummer until I read through the thread :D. Nice set, enjoyed it a lot. And glad to see that some live rehearsals are finally happening in the world. Looking forward to the next set!

PS:
Judging by the logo on the wall, are you using Pirate Studios rehearsal space or is it just a coincidence?

Thanks GLP. Yep we use Pirate Studios which are pretty good generally. That's a premium room...the standard ones are very small.

Enjoyed the second batch as much s the first.  Going to be an enjoyable show, Jason.

I think your interpretations of the synth-pop tunes work really well.

Hope you get to perform for an audience soon.

Just watched both, really enjoyed them.

The Digitech trio seems to be a good solution to no drummer.

Thanks David and Tony for listening glad you enjoyed them! There are odd open mics that have reopened but it looks like CVD19 is going south in the UK so I expect them to stop shortly.... in all honesty we don’t feel that comfortable performing in a pub with current situation. Practicing though is good and this weeks session was pretty close to what we were before CVD.

Thanks RC23 we didn’t initially intend to use the Trio, but I did a couple of tracks and it seemed to work okay so it’s just gone from there. It’s so quick to put a backing drum track together that it’s a no brainier...plus it still feels more natural than a canned backing track. I’m just waiting for Trio++ at some point.

And what would you be looking for in the Trio++, Jason.  Trio as is seems pretty darn amazing.

Great stuff! Particularly liked Bad moon rising, Tainted love and Everybody wants to rule the world; three tracks that are meaningful to me because of certain events in my life! I think that the Trio does a great job, dunno whether to get some pads or one of those 😂

It does most stuff so well you get tripped up by the little stuff it doesn't do so well. I think most of the improvements could be made by improving/developing new management software for the PC. One of the real irritations is that once you've "recorded" your drum track part/track you can't manually adjust the Tempo. So for instance our first Tainted Love track we decided was too slow..there is a tempo knob on the Trio that allows you to adjust it BUT it doesn't save the new position which is no good for us as we simply switch between songs in a liveset. Only option was to re-record.

Outro's needs more options. There is only one option.

Intro - it would good to be able to have drums count us in BUT then only come in later on. You can sort of fiddle this with the looper but it's not that great AND I'm not great at the moment at kicking the drums in off the pedal.

There needs to be something to allow "muted" parts in a song and something to allow for dynamics in particular a softer/quieter option so you can differentiate between verse and chorus. There is something that allows a more energetic part but it's not really suitable most of the time. On the DSTRUM they did have this.

Thanks Darrel and glad you enjoyed those. That was pretty much the first time we've got a clean run through on everybody wants to rule the world. I often forget the order of the lyrics which doesn't help.

I actually bought a Zoom Rhythmtrak as I was bit concerned on our reliance on the Trio. It definitely has more "control" BUT (and it's a massive BUT) it takes oodles of time to programme compared to the Trio. What I can do on the Trio in about 30mins will take me hours and hours on the Zoom to the extent that I'm not using it. I want to spend more of my time playing guitar than programming a drum machine.

Jason - you and 'the band' are doing great here. I'm so please that you've been able to get into the rehearsal studio.
Re: the Trio+, have you tried using it with an FS3X footswitch?
You can also use it to have the Trio operating in one of three different modes.
It would also allow you to have the Trio+ on a stand / mount to have some controls near to hand as the other controls are on the floor.

Thanks Richard it's definitely a lot better practicing with others. Although you wouldn't believe it from the video I do have a FS3X which is what I use all the time...I just never get around in practice to putting the full unit at desk level. I've looked at the modes and the "play" mode that allows you to mute things is something I need to explore. I think the challenge is all around timing particularly as I'm playing guitar, singing, triggering the odd guitar effect AND messing about with the drums..it's probably all a bit much for one but practice does tend to deliver in the end....otherwise the Bass player is going to have to pick it up OR we actually get a drummer.

No problem David... on a positive note it looked at one stage as if this was the end of the line for the Trio+ as most of the original team had been let go when it was swallowed into Harman when Samsung bought Harman...however on the forum recently it was confirmed there will be a third iteration although it's probably 1-2 years away. I believe that even today it's a very strong seller (and there is nothing else on the market like it).

Excellent Rossco, just about to watch the 2nd video now.   I really enjoyed Mystify me!  INXS are a band close to my heart.
.
This is a great post, I love the live vibe and the chit chat between tunes, reminds of jamming with buddies in years gone by.    Nothing better than having a proper studio room to rehearse in, no distractions!    I just want to get out and jam now!   Thanks for posting these, very enjoyable!

Rossco

Not had much time to listen to many recordings recently but could not miss out on an opportunity to see how an old friend was doing. And boy he's doing grand ! You've come a long way lad and although its the two of you its still a band and "oven ready" by the looks and sound of things. The set listing over the two videos was a great mix even for an old rocker like me. But the playing was tight and balanced but your vocals have really come on these days. I hope that when this covid situation quietens down, you can get out on the road and really let rip.

Really pleased to see how far you have come mate. Be safe and take care.

Cheers

Toby
