Play Backing Tracks Through Your Amp's FX Loop With A Looper Pedal
« on: September 26, 2020, 03:07:37 am »
This is my first tip clip. I haven't seen this trick posted any where before. If the instructions in the video aren't clear or if you're distracted by my orange trees, the instructions are in the video description. This little hack has me playing my tube amp a lot more lately.

Thanks @rwoodlin! This was a real game changer for me. My tube amp was starting to gather dust because it was kind of limiting not being able to practice directly over backing tracks. I went out and bought another looper so that I can have one always loaded and ready for whatever skill I'm working on.

It may be useful to add that some loopers have multiple loop memories, which can be used for different backing tracks.

And  some of these, like the Boss RC3, can connect to a PC so you can upload tracks directly to the looper. The RC3 actually has some built-in drum loops in some of its memories, and there's a whole load of backing tracks available to load directly in from Boss Tone Central:

My new 2nd looper has the ability to import/export loop files as needed:
https://www.donnerdeal.com/products/pre-sale-new-donner-beltway-looper-guitar-effect-pedal
This frees my Ditto to continue to function as a scratch pad always at the ready. I really like the simplicity of a one button looper.

I was hoping that the 1/2 speed function of the Donner Beltway would be more useful than it turned out to be.

And you can still operate the foot-switches when wearing thongs with some practice

Some very cool and mellow playing there Clint.

Your video has given me something to think about but my amp doesn’t have an fx loop. At the moment I can stream backing tracks from the internet on Spotify and then try to improvise pentatonic scale notes over that.

And if you are into that, Gordon, then go over and check out the Guitar Challenges area where there are a number of topics posted that have a backing track and different people's playing over the track, with the usual healthy does of encouragement, feedback, and suggestions.

If your amp has an AUX in or bluetooth capability, you are all set. Just play your backing track through one of those options. This method addresses amps without those features, which happens to be the case with most tube amps. By all means have a go at playing some pentatonic chops, would dig hearing you play some lead chops.
