Brainstorm - Maybe (cover)
« on: September 15, 2020, 08:50:05 pm »
Hi everyone,
It's one more sad cover, sorry  ;)
Brainstorm is band from Latvia and maybe some people never heard "Maybe" before :D
This song is about loneliness and people dissociation in modern world.
Mike kindly agreed to help me and did excellent original solo to this song. For the first time he used his new Gibson 8)
His solo really added dramatic nature and beauty to this song.
And I played fingerstyle also for the first time, haha...
Hope, our cover will be pleasant to you.
Leo

Lyrics:

(Verse 1)
My body, my hand
My heaven, my land
My guardian angel is mine
And you say,
My dreams, my head
My sex, my bed
And that's my Corona with lime

[Chorus]
And then I say,
Maybe we could divide it in two
Maybe my animals live in Your Zoo

(Verse 2)
And you say,
My hate, my frown
My kingdom, my crown
My palace of court is mine
And you say,
My lights, my show
My years to grow
The time that I spend is fine

(Chorus)
But then I say
Maybe we could divide it in two
Maybe my animals live in Your Zoo
And then I say maybe
Maybe I'm in love with you

(Verse 3)
And you say,
My coat, my hat
My bones, my fat
My zipper is shut by me
And you say,
My skin, my blood
My devil, my God
My freedom is what you see

(Chorus)
But then I say
Maybe we could divide it in two
Maybe my animals live in Your Zoo
Then I say maybe
Maybe I'm in love with you

My God! (to-do-do-do-do-do)

But then I say
Maybe we could divide it in two
Maybe my animals live in Your Zoo
Then I say maybe
Maybe I'm in love with you
[Bridge]
My beginning, my end
My nuclear bomb to pretend
My beginning, my end
My nuclear bomb

Love it, love it a lot. Great dynamics, range of tones in your vocal Leo. Great guitar work from both of you. Nice, clean mix, timing is spot on. Thankyou.

I hadn't heard the song before. It's a catchy, and I like that the melody has some phrasing/timing "surprises" in it. I just listened to the Brainstorm original, too, and your cover definitely conveyed the song well. Nicely done!

A most pleasing listen, Leo. Loved the melody, lyrics of this on, and a great arrangement and production as always.

Plus a fabulous lead to wrap it all up - fine playing Mike.

Brilliantly crafted Leo, you have put together a song rich in texture, dynamic, tone and feel. I liked everything about it. I thought your vocal was superb, and a great guest appearance from the new Gibson on that solo. Bravo. :)

Hi Leo,

As a song, a little bit on the lighter side for my taste, but you've done a great job.
The tones are really good.  There are so may layers of sound which blend very well. Solo was great - got a late 80s rock ballad feel.
Cool ending.

Terrific stuff Leo (and Mike). I don’t know the song but I really enjoyed your version. Great playing and production. Especially enjoyed the guitar in the last section.

TonyP, batwoman, J.W.C., DavidP, close2u, digger72, sairfingers, Alex6strings,
many thanks to all! Kind comments.

Nice, clean mix, timing is spot on.
Thank you, Maggie. Yes, acoustic guitar played the most role with this beat.

I like that the melody has some phrasing/timing "surprises" in it.
Haha, the music theory teaches us it's good if song has some surprises for listeners. But it must be no more than two surprises per song, otherwise the audience may be offended ;) I try to follow this rule  :D

Plus a fabulous lead to wrap it all up - fine playing Mike.
Yes, Mike did perfect solo really, my hat's off!

Brilliantly crafted Leo, you have put together a song rich in texture, dynamic, tone and feel. I liked everything about it.
Richard, thanks, your opinion is important for me.

;) The next cover will be in true heavy blues rock style, I think it's enough with sad songs  :D
And yes, there are 26 tracks in this project.

Cool ending.
I did this because I just couldn't fade out this brilliant solo, I had to save it completely  :)

Hey guys,

I did not know the song. It's a very nice one. your playing and global sound is really nice here. The lyrics reminded me a bit your cover of halestorm - Amen, which. at the time, I really appreciate.

Great job mate. And what is this new Gibson guitar ??  :D

A nice collaboration with you & Mike!  Like said earlier, the ending was good. Also, the bomb effect was a surprise, even though “nuclear” was in the lyrics.

I listened for your finger-style. Was it tied in with the keyboard notes and panned right?  My ears are never good in deciphering so was just curious. Anyway, all good!  Enjoyed it.

pkboo3,
thank you!

Yes, you're partly right. And there is left acoustic guitar track in this mix, also finger-style.
I think if it's interesting for you and someone else (maybe batwoman;)), so I did acoustic version of this song right now  :D

Oh yes Leo, batwoman loves this. Thankyou  :)  It showcases your guitars and vocals beautifully. There's something about this song that suits your voice and range well. What a treat.

You can include me in among the "someone else"s, Leo.

Enjoyed this version as much as the first, just listening to the guitar parts with the separation you gave them. And could really appreciate your skills playing the parts.

Lovely tone, use of fx in the mix. Interesting I might have thought the guitars in particular the left side were a clean electric a lot of the time.

Thanks for sharing this

Really good work Leo. That felt really complete - like every part the song needed was present and correct. Difficult to do with home recording I think. Anyway, very impressive.

Nice job guys. I found the vocals and play to be top notch stuff. Solo was great. Mike never ceases to amaze whit his guitar work..... I did find one thing to bum over. I think this ending had a blast explosion in it and I found that kind of wimpy. There is some good stuff out there for free that is great for such things....

Cagn, pkboo3, RC23, pikeamus, schlaffenwagen, LBro,
many thanks for feedback!

Well, I'm not the author of these lyrics... What about me, I'd prefer "sexy bomb"   ;D

Great stripped back version ... I like it also ... so include me in the 'someone else' category. :)
To my mind, those version was too stripped   :D So I added just a little bass + drums in it. And a piece of my whistling at the ending. Find new "light" version, it's the final one  ;)  And I have to move on.

Difficult to do with home recording I think.
Yes, it's not easy  ;) But very interesting, I like this!

A nice rendition of a 20yo old pop song;)
You're right, this year there is 20'th anniversary of this beautiful song, why not?  ;)

I did find one thing to bum over. I think this ending had a blast explosion in it and I found that kind of wimpy.

LB, specially for you I've posted that "light" version without any booooom at the ending ;)

Cheers,
Leo
