If you had £500 what electric guitar would you buy?
« on: September 04, 2020, 01:50:05 pm »
Me and the wife have our 40th wedding anniversary in a couple of weeks and we wanted to celebrate this by buying each other something. Were to be going on a cruise but that got cancelled!!

Anyway my other half wants to buy me an electric guitar. Good news indeed and funnily enough I'm not saying no. We have set the limit at £500.

So if you had £500 what electric guitar would you buy and why?

It depends on the sort of music you think you would like to play.

For maximum versatility, you could look at an HSS equipped Strat style.

At that price point, there's loads of good options and it largely comes down to personal preference for brand.

Cheers,

Keith

Depends on what music you are into and what style you want to play.

And even that is controversial because - some say - you can even play metal on a Telecaster if you want to.

And the question is not even very precise. Do you want to know exactly the guitar you should buy, the model or the brand?

My experience tells me that those kind of questions always conclude with: "Go in a store and play some guitars".

Nice place to be ...

Happy (oending) anniversary.

You already have an HSS Strat style covered ...

Just as an update I have now bought myself a Yamaha Pacifica 112 of eBay. Needs new strings and a clean though!! Just an amp to go.

... so I am going to suggest other types ...

Hollow & semi-hollow

Epiphone Dot or Epiphone Casino Coupe
Epiphone ES-339 Pro or Gretsch G5222 Electromatic or G&L ASAT Classic Bluesboy semi-hollow

Telecaster style

G&L ASAT CLassic

Les Paul style

PRS SE 245

If I'm right, there is a large PMT store not too far from you that may stock some / all of these types.

There’s a couple that I would look for, any of the PRS SE range would be very nice; You can possibly get a Hagstrom Super sweed for just under £500 (Les Paul type) or maybe one of the Sire Larry  Carlton range, their semi is very nice!
Still here, still learning - no longer letting Fibromyalgia get in the way, it sucks but doesn’t have to mean your life stops!

Just picked up a fender players series Telecaster, it should be in that price range with the exchange rate and everything.
Do buy it from a good shop where they check the setup for you, as an additional quality check.
But it is a great guitar to play, feels like a quality instrument and with a set of locking tuners would be on par with the US Fender Telecasters that go for double the price.
It is an inexpensive mod for the future.

Well, if I pretend my guitars disappeared and I had to go buy a new electric I'd personally go look at telecasters that were in my budget (including used teles). I like them because they've got a classic sound I like (and a classic look/feel), a fixed bridge, and what I find is a good balance of tonal variety and controls simplicity.

I hope you're getting on top of your search for a great guitar.
It's our 40th this year as well and we'd planned on having our "trip of a lifetime" but that, of course, is abandoned. I wouldn't get away very easily with spending £500 on another guitar at the moment. The wife's approval would not be forthcoming. I've compromised and bought a £71 Harley Benton S type Kit, which is sitting in my music room waiting for me to gather enough impetus to put it together. I'm wondering what an earth I was thinking in getting it. Just because I watched Hank Marvin playing Apache in a tv programme and felt I had to have a Strat...a copy.
I've got an Epiphone Dot, purchased a year ago, and a Tele style, Hondo Fame Series 757, whatever that is.
Bought as a birthday present for my son around 1992 in a Melbourne Pawn Shop.

That money I'd go for an Epiphone Les Paul Custom. They're great guitars and... I'm a sucker for a les paul custom haha.
