Good Quality Guitar Cable Opinions?
« on: August 15, 2020, 10:16:25 pm »
Hi Guys,
I'm just thinking ahead but doing early research never hurts!

I'd like some opinions on good quality, reliable guitar cables that don't cost the earth. I've looked at a couple of websites & there are various ones as you know. Not being familiar with many of the brands, I've no idea what one(s) will be worth buying or what price range you'll find them in. I haven't got an amp yet, need to do more research there & not really ready for the cost of one at this stage. It's also a question I'll leave for another thread.

So your valued opinions are welcome. :)

Cheers

Tony.

Speaking as an Electronics Engineer, there a huge amount of BS and snake oil around cables, whether they are for hifi or for guitar.

What is a good guitar cable? One that doesn't fall apart or break easily.

After that it is largely subjective opinion that usually doesn't stand up to any scientifically rigorous testing.

Don't pay peanuts, because you will get junk. But don't feel you have to spend a fortune, because you don't.

As a guideline, for a 1.8 to 3m cable, you should spend between  £5 and £25. Planet Waves, Stagg,
..Fender, or basic own-brand cables are all fine choices for you..

Anderson's do a basic 3m cable for about £5-6 quid. That will do you nicely.

Edit: £4.99

Spend £3 more and you can get their "Tourtech" range, which are probably slightly more rugged.

Feel free to pay more if you want a branded cable or like the look of (for instance) the patterned braid, but don't expect superior sound quality.

At that price, you could consider getting a spare one.

Cheers,

Keith

If you are any good at soldering get ones that you can unscrew the connector covers so you can resolder the wires when they break.

Just to add my 2 cents, electrical engineer by trade and hobby.

Doesn't make much sense to pay massively for "gold coated super pro cables".
You can get good quality cables, 3m for under 25€/£
I would stay away from the very cheap stuff under 5€/£

I am using this Klotz Vintage Vina300.
- low capacitance
- good shielding
- anti-kink
- decent connectors

This has:
- Textile outer jacket (I like the look and it helps with  not getting stuck and easy rollup)

I have seen a remark about connector types that can be opened/soldered and are not pressed. Makes sense as it allows them to be repaired if you have some wire break at the connector. But the stuff you need to actually solder it, the time it takes to do that properly, it is less expensive in this price range to just get a new/spare cable.
Unless you are into that sort of thing, already have the tools and are willing to spend the time on that. (or have a friend who will do it for you).

More helpful info, thanks Spike, I've added this to my notes.

What is the end game? To have a trouble free/worry free rig? That doesn't exist at any cost. To learn about guitar gear? You'll do that no matter the cost. Find the sweet spot between value and quality? That's what it's all about for me.

1972 wants this moniker back: "Buy cheap, buy twice." What was once considered cheap = inexpensive junk. There is still some of that around, but there is a lot of value to be had out there for what was once considered cheap.

I have genuine Fender cables, high-value Monoprice and Planet Waves. I can't tell the difference in any meaningful way one from the other. If I start to hear some buzzing, I'll troubleshoot the cables the same as if they were top of the line Mogami.

Bottom line, I like the Monoprice cables (and most of their gear as well) just fine.

Again, thanks Spike & CT, much appreciated info.

Another benefit of asking all these questions...getting to be introduced to lots of new people on here! Big thumbs up. :)

Hello, I bought Lava cable blue demon - darkened my sound. So I learned that cables do make a difference in tone. I have Planet Waves and Mogami Silver. I really like the Mogami - clear and bright (lifetime warranty), but PW is also good and used by many pros. Get the shortest cable you need - 10 - 12 feet.

I’ve used Plant Waves 10’ cables for quite a while now and would highly recommend them!
Still here, still learning and still a monumentally stubborn old f4rt 😂

Elixir Nanoweb Super-Light on my Strats (9s)
Elixir Nanoweb Light on my Gibson SG and LPs (10s)

But trying these 9.5s on my 2 Washburn HBs, Daddario EXL120+. They are staying in tune consistently and I like their feel.  8)

Way too early for that, lack of sleep and Darrell's 10' threw me off into a parallel universe. My bad.
If it helps, been using Stagg and Piranha for ages and no issues.
