Pillar of Davidson- Live (cover)
« on: August 02, 2020, 04:08:04 pm »
Circumstances dictate I have less time to fritter these days and I have chosen to cut down on the forum and songwriting course to try to keep the guitar playing going (that is the purpose of this site, isn't it?). I do miss being active though.

Bytron did a cover of the band Live recently. I remember buying the cd when it came out. I loved the artwork on the cover and this song remains a firm favourite.
I believe Michael Stipe was one of the finest rock singers/front-men of my generation. I especially enjoy his backing harmonies at the end of this, as well as My Ghost, which I also covered not too long ago.

Found tabs on the web. Had initial problems figuring out strumming till I discovered it's a waltz  ::)
Clean feed on electric into my Trio+ for backing track, using open chords.
Barre chord strumming different pattern on classical guitar with vocals & video recording on my mobile.
Additional vocal backing harmonies for outro.
Mixed in audacity with no effects apart from balance and gain adjustments.
Fun factor 15  8)
Miss you all, guys & dolls (yeah- so sue me  :P)

(Don't forget to check out the original here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8smveMYZTlE )

Hey Mr barre chords!
If spending less time on the forum helps you create stuff like this......well, we should all take a leaf out of your book and play more music! That was really great and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I could hear a bit of Michael Stipe in there.

I know hee-haw about production but perhaps the trio was overpowering your acoustic a little? Anyway great to hear you play Brian.

Hope your new way if living is suiting all.
Good progress on those barres.

... electric into my Trio+ for backing track ...

The electric?
Why is it not in shot?

 ;) :D

@ Gordon,
Haha, I don't subscribe to the 'this was easy' school of thought. I've been working on it since Bytron did his Live cover a couple of weeks ago.
You hit my Achilles heel re production. I specialise in lo-fi. (I took Clint's good advice a while ago and set the bar where I like it- low enough to never be disappointed with plenty of leeway for improvement.)
A little production required if you want to use the looper & leccy as backing; mainly synchronisation, a tiny bit of 'panning' (for fool's gold) and some gain adjustments... and yes you're right, I could done with more oomph in the vocal/acoustic, but the audacious gremlin told I might get a clip if I asked for more  ;)
Cheers for the vote of confidence.

@ Richard
So far so good, thanks  ;)
Yes The
It would have been much more complicated for me to do it the other way around  ::)
Anyway, I'm using Hagar to learn a new language. I heard if you lick it you can learn new words and if you lick it a lot you make sentences.
So far, I can say 'Duh' pretty fluently  ;)
I'm learning songs man- gimme a break!

Good to see and hear from you, Brian.

Hope the more important matters in life are settling into a new rhythm, working for all.

I must say you appear ... I know how deceptive appearances can be ... to have made the move to the multi-track productions playing Hagar and the classical-with-no-name-guitar (sue me), Audacity mixing and producing a video with ease, achieving better-than-rank-beginner results.

Really enjoyed your cover and, although not a big listener to Live (The Dolphin's Cry one of their's I know and love), I think you got their vibe in your way.

A thought ... if boosting the vocal/classical in Audacity was going to clip, then set that track at an appropriate level and mix the trio track down to blend to that.

Lastly ... reference to Michael Stipe threw me a bit, him being the lead singer of REM  :o

Haha. Just to prove how little I know about production, until I read David’s comments and put 2 & 2 together, I thought you meant some lippy member of your household was threatening you with a clip round the ear if you played any louder! Duh! 😂

Brian, I am always impressed with your ability to play and sing at the same time. I'm not familiar with this song, but it's an enjoyable rendition.

As for mixing, it's about balancing the levels. If audacity is complaining about clipping the overall track, then you should be able to reduce the level of the recorded Trio+ track to allow you to boost the vocal/acoustic.

Bear in mind I'm not that familiar with using Audacity for multi-track mixing. Audacity doesn't have any sort of bus capabilities like a real DAW and I suspect that makes it a bit less easy to work on the mix.

Cheers,

Welcome back! Hope things are going well. Always good to hear your tracks. Fun factor 15 sounds like a great place to be, and if it takes you in this direction it is a very good path.

Playing whatever the heck you want has a lot to do with the overall fun level. You certainly have always done that. Yeah, you have your zone and bar, stick with it and keep pressing ahead. With electric guitar and Trio loops, toss in multitrack recording (including vocals) I have to give you full credit and applause for continuing to stretch.

The only thing holding you back now is Audacity -- the time to start with a really good DAW is now. Most folks here have embraced Reaper, I could never get over the latency issues, so your mileage may vary. I went back to Garageband on Mac and never looked back.

Yeah, that coy grin at the end says it all.  Love this.  Barre chords?  Check.  Multi-track?  Check.  Backup singers?  Check.  Different instruments?  Check.  Mixing Engineer?  Check.  Vocalist?  Check.  Sounds to me like your an old pro, or at least well on your way.  Fun factor for me watching your progress is right up there with your fun factor for performing it.  Really nice, Brian.   I really enjoyed watching/listening to this.  You've come a long way, my friend.  Keep it up!

So good to see and hear you our Brian of the Barre Chords, and what a mighty fine recording you've given us. Seems you're making forays into the labyrinth and doing it with great success.

Apologies for tardy response peeps.
I was in Edinburgh for a few days helping daughter number one move all her stuff back home after living there for 5 years. (I may post something in the chatting section if I get the time)

Cheers David
Ta for the compliments and I'm glad you found some enjoyment  :)
...better-than-rank-beginner
Haha, indeed- I have promoted myself to advanced beginner / early intermediate.
I like to squeeze as much out of whatever I have, so will be sticking to audacity till I replace my dinosaur desktop with something more modern...
re Michael Stipe... sacrilege!  ;)

@ Gordon,
I'm often purposefully ambiguous  :P

@ Keith,
Thanks mate. Singing has multiple functions- Primarily, I enjoy it a lot- but part of me still believes it distracts from errors in playing  :)
Regarding the DAW, if I was starting from scratch, I would definitely go with Reaper or such, but I had a rudimentary knowledge of how to use audacity, so will probably stick to my phone and that that for 'emergency recordings'. I wouldn't know what a bus was, unless it hit me. I'm a long way off what I would regard as a good rendition worth decent recording, so will save that for later and focus on learning to play first  :)
btw. 4 of us will be ringing 'properly' this Sunday for the first time.

@ Clint,
All still good in the wheelhouse, as you guys say- even though there's a bit of a storm blowin' outside.
Good to know my compass, Clint, is reliable as ever  ;)

@ Dave,
What can I say?
Very generous.
Thank you.

@ Maggie,
Cheers- See Dave above  ;D

@ Max,
Haha, there's a lot of dross on that YT channel- one day I'll have to tidy it up!
I remember when you joined and was thinking to myself: He's a bit handy with the guitar- I wonder how long he'll remain on the forum? Couple of years later- still here! I do miss my teutonic music updates though  :P

Or in my case ... hopefully people will think that at least the playing isn't as bad as the singing, cause if my singing detracted from the errors in playing it would not be in a happy way  ;D

Brian, you are stepping it up pretty quickly. Moving right along. I like the song and you did really well.  Is this the first posting in which you’ve used Audacity?  Impressive!

Haha, we're all acutely aware of our shortcomings.
Maybe you and I record and share them publicly  to keep them hidden in full view?  :)

@ Pam,
Thank you. I wouldn't say 'quickly', but am happy to still be making progress, esp. as it remains so enjoyable rather than a chore  :)
I think this is the 3rd multi-track I mixed with audacity using my Trio+ looper. (There were a couple of separate guitar/vocal recordings before that.)
It's fun, but time-consuming.

Great job Brian, I loved both the guitar playing and the vocals. Unfortunately, I don't know the original, but your performance sounded beautifully!

Hey Brian, I enjoyed this and think this was very good mate.  I don't know the song either but I know I'd love to go through your music collection.  I liked what you did with the backing etc.   Thanks for continuing to post your performances, watching your progress has morphed into just watching and enjoying your performances.   I need you here Brian so i'm glad you're still around.  cheers
