Metallica - Fade To Black
« on: July 24, 2020, 09:54:44 am »
Hi guys,

Here is another track from Metallicas "Ride The Lightning" album.
This time I decided to try my hands at the epic ballad "Fade To Black", in which James Hetfield mourns the theft of his beloved Marshall amp ;)

There is a ton of stuff going on in this track and it took quite some work to get all the parts recorded and (hopefully) mixed into a balanced track.

I finally got a chance to use my cheap nylon string guitar in a recording, as well as my steel string acoustic and of course my ESP "metal" electric guitar with the Evertune bridge. All in all I recorded 14 tracks of guitar for this cover (some, of course, only present for short periods of time in the mix).

Hope you'll enjoy it!

Cheers,
Kasper

Wow,
Found this refreshingly good. Great mix, excellent play and super production! I don't think I ever heard the original and I might have to take that in. But your version rocks big time. I like the transitions from one mode to another.

It sure shifts gears in spots from one direction to another! It is pretty long at nearly 7 minutes, but the play and diversity eat that time up well.

I really enjoyed this and hope you crank some more that are similar as this was phenomenal!
Keep rockin Kasper,
LB

Just started listening now.
The worldwide phenomenon of Metallica passed me by so I don't know the original either.

The Fade To Black I know and love is a Dire Straits song. Which I would also love to hear you play.

Anyway, as your track is moving along I'm needing to remind myself that this is just you, all you, not some worldwide megastar musicians with millions of dollars to spend on the best studios, producers, engineers etc.
Wow Kasper, this is a fantastic piece of work.
You rock my friend.

Kasper

Thank you for brightening my morning. As a huge Metallica fan all I can say is awesome. Sounds like a huge effort went into the playing, recording, mixing and production but it is an unbelievable instrumental cover of the original track. Huge respect Mr F  :)

Cheers

To echo Close's comment ... I am always blown away how you can recreate the sound of the original, apart from being able to play the parts of all these fantastic players, which is super impressive, and also to nail the tones.

I don't know the songs on this album ... only really know the hits from the black album ... but have no doubt at all that if I could strip the vocal from the original, marry it to your instrumental, I'd not be able to tell the difference.

Still remember the first track of yours I listened to ... an "attempt" (your words) at some Deep Purple ... and as I started to listen I was sure you were having us on and were sharing the original ... until the moment when the vocals didn't kick in.

Bravo on another outstanding production.

Really awesome guitar work, loved the acoustic part. I have always been a Metallica fan and I think they are number one in trash metal  ;)

Hey guys,

Thanks for taking a listen and for the nice feedback! I'm happy to see that even the non-metal guys can find some enjoyment from this track :)

I must admit I also really, really like how the acoustic sections turned out. It's just so much fun to stack up all these different acoustic parts and see how the track fills out and takes shape. I tried some different techniques for recording the acoustic instruments this time, instead of having the mic up close (where you then have to experiment - point it at the 12th fret? Which angle? etc etc) I tried more of a "room mic" approach, where I sat approx 1 meter from the mic and just adjusted my position and angle to the mic until it sounded good in the headphones.

@close: *That* Fade to Black is actually one of my favorite DS tracks... from that album/time period at least. Would love to play it, but it's going to be very hard without the lap steel and such :(

Cheers,
Kasper

Have to admit that same as Close this passed me by (and not a metal fan at all) BUT doesn't mean I can't appreciate a good song put together very well. Thanks Kasper and keep recording.

Thanks for giving us some details Kasper, I'm always interested in how recordings are made. 14 guitar tracks that gives me something  to like about  ::)

I love the soundscape in the beginning, and can appreciate the other elements of the recording too. Sure does create light and shadow.

Terrific stuff! I love the contrast of acoustic and electric. I’m not into metal but this was great, a fantastic production.
