How to tell what the finish on my guitar is?
« on: June 27, 2020, 02:50:55 pm »
Hi,
I have a Hondo 757 Telecaster copy, that is finished in some form of clear finish (i.e. I can see the wood). I understand I need to be a bit careful on cleaning products based on different finishes, and if I want to tidy up the couple of dents/scratches I will need to know as well. So can anyone tell me how I find out? I haven't been able to find any specific information online, I suspect it is nitrocellulose but can't be sure.

Thanks,
Paul

I doubt that it would be Nitro, it would probably have been made by Samick in Korea in the 60’s some time, at a guess a pu finish. Best thing to do is try it out in an area that’s not visible. Using a water based paint would reduce reactivity!

Can you take off the pickguard? If the guitar has been finished underneath you could use this area to experiment on.

Get a cotton bud with some cellulose thinners on
If the finish comes off it's Nitro if not its poly

As already said try it somewhere that can't be seen like a pickup cavity
