003 2019 -- So Happy Together (The Turtles)
« on: December 30, 2019, 08:54:35 pm »
So the songs in this competition are supposed to make you feel happy. I figure a song with this title (So Happy Together) fits the bill. I have been super busy lately so I knocked this off very, very quickly today and a couple of good flubs show as a result. Mostly centered around the dang B7 chord. But I wanted to squeeze this in before the deadline. I believe this is the first video in which I've played my Seagull Entourage CW Black. When I was viewing the video, I noticed how cockeyed I had my capo too.

This classic Summer of Love song was released in March 1967 by that groovy band, The Turtles.

So happy that you opted to record and share despite limited learning and rehearsal, Hilts.

You got that fun late 60s vibe going, sounding smooth and relaxed.  And I think B7 warrants a stronger more descriptive adjective than "dang" ... perhaps "#$%!" would do the trick and not be deemed offensive (Richard, just delete from the "..."s, if I am sailing too close the wind)

It certainly is one that raises a smile and I'm pretty sure you get lots of folk joining in round the "camp-fire" if you played that for friends and family.

Somebody played it at one of the Music Club evenings and while it was familiar, it was one of those songs where the title and artist was an unknown.  And after research to discover title and band, I confess The Turtles was a band not known to me.

I was tempted to try and learn it but never acted.

Now listening to you I am again tempted again ... you make the playing and singing look so easy and natural and sure it would go down well at an Open Mic.  But I expect it is not as easy as you make it look and maybe this moment of "tempted to learn it" will also pass.

Great choice for this happy themed compo hilts.
A summary first ... the choruses are great and full of joie de vivre ... you take them with happy confidence ... the verses are tentative and hesitant and I'm guessing that you are not only in the moment on each chord / lyric but thinking ahead with a bit of dread to that pesky B7 chord. Hot darn it! B7 ... yeuch ... who needs it eh?  :o Well actually on this song you don't .. but more or that later.
You mentioned it was under-rehearsed and offered here with little preparation. With that in mind I suggest how you can improve this song with only minor tweaks as you have the basic elements going on.
The main thing that stands out for me is a strumming issue and a lack of consistency in your strum patterns which detracts from the song as it means it lacks a cohesive feel.
You start with a solid 1, 2, 3 4 + pattern but that is replaced with 1 2 3 + 4 + when the vocal starts and that is in turn soon replaced by 1 2  + 4 + then 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + ... all within the first 30 seconds of intro & verse 1. CHanging patterns is definitely someting that enhances a song - to reinforce a pattern line, to mark the changes between sections, verses, chorus, bridge etc. But there needs to be an established pattern to begin with that you then make a conscious choice to vary and alter. Find the intro & verse pattern that you like most and stick with it for all of the verses. Do the same for the chorus. Maybe find one slightly altered pattern for the end of verse line 'so happy together' as a lead in to the chorus. I think this will enhance and improve your version markedly.
I'd love to hear a recording if you do go back to working on this as it suits you and you can easily slip it into your repertoire. :)

Yup .. you can transpose ... You are playing these chords (not relative to capo, these actual chords)

Verse:  F#m    E    D    C#7
Chorus: F#    C#m7  F#   A

To play those exact same chords in a different position, you could capo at fret 8 and play these chord shapes:
With Capo at fret 8 edit to correct ... sorry fret 9 = F# minor

Verse:  Am  G  F  E7
Chorus: A  Em7  A   C

Capo 8 would kill a grown man if he tried to sing from there!

Good job Hilts! I'm late on this one as well.

This song has been very popular over the years, check out all the cover versions:

Ha ha - I got it wrong too - it's capo fret 9.

But the key is still the same - no difference in the vocals.
The fingers might need to squeeze in a little. ;)

You could do it with capo fret 3 and different chord shapes ... it would involve barre chords ... but less of a finger squeeze ...

With Capo at fret 3[

Verse:  Dm  C  A#  A7
Chorus: D  Am7  A   F

@ Libitina, DavidP, embiship, Fourtwo, batwoman, ct, Thanks for taking the time to listen and glad you liked it.

@ close Thanks for the feedback and excellent info in your comments. Good observations on my strumming with this one. You're right about that dang B7 chord. In the back of my mind as I was getting closer to it I'd be thinking, "Don't screw up the fretting, don't screw up the fretting." LOL

Capo 9 eh? I don't think I've ever played anything below the capo'd 7th fret. But heck, I'm game to try anything! Ha-ha.

Nice one Hilts, haven't heard this in a long time! And as the other said, it made me smile as well!

Please show me a video of you singing a song played at capo 9.

Octave down instead of falsetto?

Such a great song and you've done it really well.

One thing to note is that there are some points (mostly the starts of the verses) where the melody is not in the right place - it's not out of tune - and it could be a concious decision - but I suspect that you're just not confident of the starting note.

Work out the starting note and play it on the guitar a few times and practice starting on it - and you'll probably find it all goes better and feels better. Right at the start it wobbles a bit but when you sing 'night' it's the right note and then you're in the right place then...

It's a super common problem - I suffer it too when I'm not confident in my ear/mind as to what the melody is exactly - play it on the guitar will really help too and help you gain confidence in the vocal.

Great job overall and enjoyed it! :)

Thank you Justin. I appreciate your comments and picking up on the starting note issue is very helpful. Not something I would have noticed on my own I'm sure. Thanks for the listen.
