2019 Cover #44 (Whatever)
« on: December 18, 2019, 06:29:48 am »
A break from the christmas songs and back with an Oasis song (one of my absolute favourites from Oasis). I have tried this one before, but this is my best attempt so far. The bridge is a bit tricky to play with bar chords (B and F#) and some quick changes from G to A. The solution was to slow the song down from the original and also to "cheat" and use partial grips for G and A (maybe a bad habit?).

The song is quite long, so its a consistency test also, difficult to keep the strumming solid for over 4 minutes.  Also like most Oasis song tricky to sing well. Struggle with some high notes in the outro of the song.

An impressive performance, Johan.  I'm not an Oasis man so don't know these songs but you seem to have the vibe and rhythm down ever so solid.  This one does look harder than the others in your repertoire, both to play and to sing.  I think you kept it steady throughout, certainly solid enough that a somebody listening in the audience would not be aware of issues.

As for partial grips ... is that what is usually called a power chord  ;D  I know when Justin talks about practising scales he is quite particular about what finger on what fret.  But makes the point that when you are playing use whatever finger works best.  And I think the same could apply here ... as long as you are hitting the notes you want to hit and when, I don't think it matters if you use a partial grip.  But for practice sake, worth working on technique to be able to play full grips at speed if you wanted to at some point.

Congrats on number 44.

And the hits just keep on coming.
Johan - you and this challenge you have set yourself are the gift that keeps on giving.
#44
Wow.
It seems hardly credible but you are right here right now.
I liked this at the slower tempo - it somehow seems to work with the lyric and it's undertones of wistfulness.
Bravo.
:)

Thanks David and Richard. I think recording week after week has paid off, I feel much more "safe" in my guitar playing now compared to 1 year ago. Strumming is better and not even bar chords is a big problem anymore.

With the feeling of more safety in my guitar playing, I have started to think about doing some live performances. Certainly inspired by the open mics from you David! Not now though, but maybe it will happen during 2020...

David: about the partial grips (or power chords), yeah I play the notes that I want, but I skip some notes in the chords to save some time. I will do as suggested though, and keep working on the quick changes with full grips.

DUrquhart: Thanks glad you liked it. Looking forward to hear you play some Oasis!

Thanks Hilts & Pilgrimpod!

Hilts: Thanks for pointing out strumming, it is pretty good in this one, starting to sound like I want. Still a bit uneven and rough at times, but getting better.

Pilgrim: Yeah, Whatever is a belter of a song, up there on the list with the best Oasis songs.

Brilliant job Johan, you're getting better every song. You've certainly come a long way this year, this sort of  challenge is something I may adopt myself in 2020, not the covers bit but on learning something new every week and getting it solidified in the guitar part of my brain, rather than hopping around like a demented magpie in a jewellers shop trying to pick up a bit of everything and mastering nothing.
I too wouldn't worry about partial grips, I've commented before about the effort I put into learning full chords only to be told by some great Youtube guitar teachers that triads (or less) are just fine and in many situations, sound better, punchier, clearer etc.

It's been a pleasure watching in listening in 2019   ;D

Hey Johan

Excellent work you really have the groove on this and your guitar sounds fantastic. Perfect tempo for me. The bridge is coming. I'd keep going with full grips because you'll need them in the end. Mind you playing a mini barre for the b without the index finger would be easier if you're struggling. You just have to get the other strings muted.

I've been thinking the same. But it feels like a good a new years resolution and I never stick to them. I'll have to make my peace with being a magpie....

Thanks b1rdland and Gareth! Cool that my cover project inspires you to think of doing something similar.

Johan, excellent work on this one. Particularly like the intro which i thought worked well. I listened before reading your comments and my initial thought was it needed speeding up a bit but I can see you chose to do it this way. I thought the strumming in particular worked really well. Thought you might have a crack at Wandering Star by Noel although only recently released.

Great job and is clearly driving personal improvement all the time.

Thanks Rossco! Ideally it should be played faster but good songs work in all tempos  :) Maybe I will give Wandering Star a go later, but I have another Noel High Flying Birds songs coming up in my 8 remaining covers in the project (which I like more than Wandering Star).
