2019 Cover #43 (Happy Xmas)
« on: December 08, 2019, 02:59:55 pm »
39 years ago the world lost John Lennon  :'(

I play this one without the embellishments which are in Justins video. Still a bit difficult for me with some nasty stretches. Maybe for next Xmas. The A-Bm change also difficult.

Looking a lot at the frets, need to work on my posture and sing into the camera more. Not sure about the strumming in this one, i was thinking to play it D-D/U-D/U like Justin suggests, but seems like a skip the second down by some reason.

Sounded ok to me Johan, the way you played it. Keep at the changes to Bm and I'm sure they'll be as smooth as the rest in no time at all.

Do admire the way you can learn to play and sing all these songs so quickly, fitting in the words and keeping the strumming so consistent.

Well done.

Ah - it's nearly Christmas and Johan is getting us in the festive spirit.
Bm can be a problem so try doing some 1-minute and some air changes ..
between it and an open chord ...
between it and a 6th string-root barre chord

Thanks David and Richard! With a couple of days of distance from the recording, I think the vocals turned out ok in this one.

I started to do as suggested an work on some air changes with Bm. A to Bm is tricky, works ok in the video but the change is still a bit slow.  Would probably be easier if I played the A as a "minibar" A?

That might work well, Johan.  Another option would be to see how it might work to use the E-shape barre chord at the 5th fret.  I find playing A that way often sounds OK, while playing B C and D up at the so-called "dusty end" usually sounds a little high-pitched to me.  Then I find an A-shape barre works OK but am starting to get off topic now, I think.

I got inspired by the posting of Eight Days A Week to see if I could learn it.  Going relatively well and I am sure you could pick it up pretty quickly (would make Bala happy if you included another Beatles cover  ;) ).  One benefit of this is it includes a change I am finding a wee bit tricky D-Bm, which would be anotehr song to learn that I think would go down well in one's repertoire and also help develop more skills around Bm.

Ah I love this song! Probably my most favorite Christmas song if you’d call it that. You did well Johan. I thought you sang this well. And the guitar sounded solid. It’s amazing how many songs you learnt this year and even better, performed them as a video recording. With only a few more weeks left I can definitely say you had an amazing year music wise 😊

Hi Johann

I've not watched Justin's lesson on this one. This sound's good though I think the strumming fits well. Guitar sounds good and your vocals rise up well for the choruses.

Merry Xmas
G

Thanks hilts, Balamutiah and Gareth.

Gareth:  Merry Xmas! Basically the same chords in Justins lesson as I play, but he uses a lot of suschords/variations for each chord, making it sound more interesting and like the original. Some of the suschords are pretty difficult though. Works well as a basic version with standard chords also.
