Fender Acoustic Thoughts
« on: November 25, 2019, 02:21:26 pm »
Hi all

I’m looking at buying an acoustic guitar, and had a hold/play of a few over the weekend

This one took my eye:

https://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Fender-Redondo-Special-Electro-Acoustic-w--Bag-Matte-Black/29KO

I guess that means my budget is about £500 as I was willing to pay that.  But I thought I’d do a bit of research first.  I know it’s important to like how the guitar feels and sounds, so that’s a couple of boxes ticked already. The fact that it’s electro acoustic is a bit of a bonus I suppose, I wasn’t looking for that.   Has anybody had any experience with fender acoustics?  What are peoples thoughts?

I'm not familiar with Fender acoustics but I'll just point out another resource for something like this. I belong to the Acoustic Guitar Forum. https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/index.php

This site gets a ton of traffic and no doubt you would get a lot of helpful advice and tips there too. Worth checking out.

There are better acoustic guitars for £500. Fender aren't exactly well known for making them.

Guitars. Fender Highway 1 Tele: Fender Shortboard LE Mustang: Ibanez AS73 semi-hollow: Ibanez SR370 bass: Squier Affinity Strat: Squier Jagmaster.

The only Fender I played recently was a Paramount.
Now, given Fender's fairly long-known reputation for having not-so-good low-mid budget acoustics I was very pleasantly surprised and liked it a lot.

It may be a tad above your price point.

The acoustic I did choose isn't - https://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Epiphone-DR-500MCE-Masterbilt-Electro-Acoustic-Natural/19G0

Okay, thanks. Where should I be looking?  I’m a bit uneducated on acoustic...

One word of caution about AGF (the site hilts linked) there are a lot of quitar
snobs over there and they will bash any guitar brand if it's not up to their caliber.
Usually $3500 and up.
Don't take their comments personally there are some good hearted people there
as well who are very helpful, but the Guitar Snobs seem to be the first to the
feeding frenzy with their brand bashing and unasked for opinions on their favorite brands.

I'm not familiar with the Fender you posted so I can't comment on its quality.
I do own a 45 year old Fender 12 string that has held up remarkably well and
still plays and sounds great.

Take a look at these, they've been reviewed in a group test with guitars up to £500 and come out favourably.

And the review:

My singing sucks so I’m learning Guitar and Ukulele, it’s fun 🌟

Check the spec for the price.

Includes ...
Solid wood front back and sides.
2x pickups with blend and stereo outs
Plek'd frets
Cutaway
Aesthetically ... different headstock to usual Epiphones, ornate neck inlays

It's a good buy imho.

Guitar reviews are like any review, 60% personal preference and 40% empirical data. If you like the way it feels, looks, sounds and plays, then it is worth it to you.

I had the pleasure of playing a bit on a $2,000 Gretsch. Only, I didn’t like the way it fit me or my hands. So, to me, it was not as valuable as my $200 Yamaha. As I said, it’s your guitar, get what you like.
