That's a bit crappy of Fender.  I'm sure they will pay heavily.   In their defence the amount of Chinese copies and fakes you can buy online now for 99$ or $150 + dollars and have them delivered to your door in less than two weeks is incredible.  I have one and it's not horrible, but it's also had pickups,  bridge,  pots and tuners replaced and had the 'Fender' logos completely removed.  So I guess I sympathise with them a little.  (I didn't buy it,  my mate bought 2 and gave me one to thank me for buying him Tommy Emmanuel tickets)
.
This made me laugh,  Eric Clapton,  The Edge and Taylor Swift?  These are the three players the journalist comes up with that play Fender Guitars.    Eric Clapton,  one of the greatest guitar players of all time, and in a lot of ways one of a a few responsible for the Strat having the identity and popularity it does today.  He's been playing Fender longer than anyone, still plays Fender, has signature series named after him.  To be in the same sentence as Taylor Swift wouldn't normally bug me, but when the sentence is about famous guitar players who play Fender it really bugs me.

Though to be fair, there was something about Taylor Swift being responsible for more young girls taking up guitar so perhaps not such a bad thing.  I guess they are broadening the spectrum to include more recent pop though I'm not sure if Taylor Swift plays Fender acoustics

Yeah I've read that too and truthfully I don't have anything against her, good on her for what she does. It just doesn't sit right with me.  I really can't say I've seen her play much guitar at all but Ive never seen any footage of her playing a Fender electric or acoustic.  I've seen her playing her namesake 'Taylor' acoustics and possibly a gibson.   Never seen her play an electric but a quick Google search shows her playing a gibson.  Couldn't see any Fenders but I didn't spend too long searching either.

This has been happening for years. That, and my leftys issues a few years ago saw me walk away from Fender for good.

In Australia, they manage all the importation and distribution of their products. No middlemen. They set the wholesale prices, which inflates the retail prices. They prevent US dealers from shipping outside the US, to protect the fat margins they've set in other countries. Gibson do much the same.

Lol Jimi Hendrix got no love. But I said John Mayer instead of Taylor Swift for the era. He’s a good guitarist honestly.

To be honest there are many Fender players that they could've mentioned, Jimmy Page, David Gilmore, Jeff Beck,  all with signature guitars, as for more recent and pop female, Shakira has a rather sparkly pink Mustang and is seen playing a stickered up black Squier Strat  in the Objection/Te Aviso, Te Anuncio Tango Video, HER plays a Telecaster and had a custom made Acrylic Strat made for (I think) The Grammy's

Throw the name Taylor Swift in to an online news article and you can # hashtag tag it for extra clicks = extra revenue ... or am I just cynical?

Yes, and no. Frankly, many younger people won't know who Eric Clapton is (or most of the other people mentioned), especially if they are not guitar players; bear in mind this was mainstream news media, not a specialist guitar news website. That may seem like blasphemy to some of us, but it's a fact. They would have heard of Taylor Swift.

So I suspect it's mainly to give a name that's recognisable and relevent to many people.

Cheers,

Keith

I guess for a lot of the younger generation who listen to current mainstream pop, the only thing they would know about John Mayer is that he's dated Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, I very much doubt they'd be that familiar with his music, bear in mind this is an article in a mainstream newspaper not a guitar magazine as Majik has also pointed out.

John Mayer is a sensational guitar player!  One of my absolute favorites!  Even though he does own and play a lot of Fenders still he kinda broke up with them a year or two ago over the strat specs he wanted them to make, which they wouldn't. So he got together with Paul Reed Smith and they the designed the Silver Sky which is now his go to stage guitar.
.
But yeah, Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer,  Dave G,ilmore,  Stevie Ray Vaughn,  Mark Knophler,  Kenny Wayne Sheppard,  Joe Bonamassa,  John Fruscannti, Buddy Guy.   Off the top of my head.   Where they got Taylor Swift from perplexes me.

Noooooooooooooooooo

Great version of that song on one of those animated films about an impresario ... forget the title of the film ... two pigs performing it.

Confession time ...

Participated in a Flash Mob dance performance to Shake It Off a few years ago ... was loads of fun
