2019 Cover #29 (Into Your Arms)
« on: August 26, 2019, 10:09:48 pm »
The song i'm trying to cover this week is a cover from The Lemonheads, included on the album "Come On Feel The Lemonheads" released in 1993. The original by Love Positions is good as well.

Playing is ok, its a pretty simple one to play. May need some more dynamics, like most of my covers. Singing is very shaky with major pitch problems. The key is a bit too high for me and it sounds really bad in some parts. First part works ok, but then its off. Need much more practice singing this one.

Applause for maintaining regular recordings, Johan.

Not much more I can say about this one ... you said it all yourself.

Perhaps try playing with a capo on and starting the song in a lower ocatve of the higher key?

Johan, nice song, which I haven’t heard for yonks, thanks for reminding me about it. Guitar is very good, that strumming hand is textbook ( wish I could say that about my own!) keeping moving throughout. Yeah, the vocal is too high for you, but who cares, it still sounds OK. Interested to hear how you feel doing all these covers has improved your playing and singing? Roll on #30!

Thanks David and b1rdland!

David: Yeah probably a good idea to try to use a capo and to sing in a lower octave. I'll try it.

b1rdland: Glad to remind you of this great song. I saw the Lemonheads (guess it was only Evan Dando remaining from the hey-days since the drummer and bassist was in their 20's) live in Stockholm this fall. Pretty good even if it sounded a bit unrehearsed at times.

The key is to high for me, but with some dedicated singing practice I think I can sing in this key. In some places it works ok. Too high for me right now though.

I think recording all these covers really has highlighted my strengths and weaknesses. Mainly I think I have gotten better "musically" from playing and singing all these song. In the beginning I was happy I could play the song from start to finish without making obvious mistakes, and not focusing to much on how to play and express the song. When playing is getting better I have started to think on how to make the song sound better and more interesting. I still have a long way to go here though. A backside of making all these covers is I never learn a song as good as I would like. I think I'm gonna work more intense with 5-10 songs next year)

Nice use of added pauses in spots. Vocals were a bit low in the mix here there and a few off-pitch areas as well. Nothing worth skipping over the video. I sensed you had some affinity for the track and that held my interest through to the end. Fine effort.

Sounds like you're maturing then as a musician, thinking about 'touch' and how to improve what you're playing to add more interest and dimensions. A mate of mine learned a bunch of songs for a charity gig and he got really bogged down with the amount of work involved (he was playing some rhythm and some lead). He said that although he learned a few licks and a bit about how songs are constructed he felt he'd stood still on his learning path. I think he probably learned more than he thinks. Anyhow I'm looking forward to your next cover  ;D

Thanks CT! I think vocals gets low/weak because I try to reach the high notes by using some kind of "home made falsetto". Sounds pretty bad and usually off pitch as well.

B1rdland: Probably he did, learning a lot of songs  for sure develops both your guitar skills and musical skills. #30 is up now!

Johan, I'm not at all familiar with this group but I thought you did a very nice performance here. Previous comments pretty much covered everything. Well done again!
