A new style of playing - Where to start?
« on: August 15, 2019, 11:31:31 pm »
Hello all. I hope you're well.
I'm looking to gee myself up again on guitar. These days I rarely play and just don't feel motivated to. I've gotten stale with playing a certain way and want to break away from that and spark my interest again.
I play the usual open chords, barre and power chords.
What I really want to do is to be able to accompany myself as I play like I seem to see everyone do elsewhere. I mean in regards to playing partial chords, triads & single sting lines etc. I suppose kind of like John Mayer or any player with good feel that can just jam with themselves without a loop pedal.
I hope this makes sense!
I play a Les Paul but again, I'm looking to get away from that and the Marshall and get a Strat to help vary things up and get me progressing again.
Any suggestions are very much appreciated. Thanks all.

for me, the style to accompany my vocals started to develop when I learned to do some basic fingerpicking.

It starts with just picking the strings of your chords seperately, then you find a pattern and then you start to embellish with variations and little melodylines and passing notes.

Perhaps you should give that a shot as well?

Why not get yourself a decent acoustic and have a go at some finger picking blues?
Take a look at Daddystovepipe’s channel on YT for some inspiration.
My singing sucks so I’m learning Guitar and Ukulele, it’s fun 🌟

Thanks all. Yes I certainly could do with starting finger picking as that is very weak at present.
I would say I'm more interested in the playing lead and rhythm at the same time right now so these video suggestions are great! Didn't realise Justin had these on here.  :D

Thanks for the replies everyone. I going to get a bit more active on the forum again as this has reminded me of what I've been missing. Cheers!

I would suggest starting at the beginning with whatever guitar you currently have. Tons of instructional videos on John Mayer's techniques.
