Maggie's Hope - an original composition
« on: July 20, 2019, 05:39:20 pm »
Maggie's Hope
An original composition by Richard Coles.
Dedicated to Maggie Good.

In April 2019, Maggie sent me some words as a song lyric.
She encouraged me to compose some music as a backing or accompaniment.
In a 30-minute flash of inspiration I composed and recorded (albeit crudely via an in-built mic in my laptop) this music.

EDIT - New version with the noise of the plane's engine muted is the first link here:

https://youtu.be/vp1egmHB3go

This one with the noise of the plane engine:
https://youtu.be/crawvXKnYow

Note: this is the guitar only, not a recording of Maggie singing to my accompaniment.

The accompanying video I took several years ago on a flight from Southampton to the island of Guernsey in the English Channel.

Enjoyed your composition, Richard, and the video.

May be missing something...was waiting for the vocals to kick in.

Thanks David.

Inspired by Maggie but not recorded as a song with Maggie.
She sent me the lyrics in hopes it would inspire me to pick up my guitar and get creative and shake off some musical lethargy.
It did.
I had an instant dose of inspiration.
And I was so delighted at Maggie's response to it also.
She already had her own version of the song with her own backing / chord progression.
She just wanted to motivate me.
So this is a song without lyrics / vocals.
Although I play some of the finger style melody parts to match the lyric as I heard them possibly being sung.

Very nice close2u! Loved the guitar.

Thanks buddy. :)

Oh yeah ... I deliberately kept the thrum noise of the plane's engine in the video.
I hope it doesn't distract.
I did do a little noise reduction in Audacity but there was still some hiss from the lo-fi nature of the recording.
And the engine noise is a bit of a mask for that.
As well as being an intrinsic part of the original video.

Very nice guitar work. The engine drone was a bit distracting for me. Maybe lower it a bit in the mix? Still a nice composition all the way around. Now I want to compose something for Maggie too! :)

Lovely composition, Richard. Very inspired indeed, nice and soothing.
And I'll have to visit Guernsey someday, I've been saying that for years now.

Nice piece Richard, reminded me of those little instrumental works by Steve Howe that he’d squeeze in between Yes’s 20 minute epics. I hope, one day you’ll share this with the vocals. “Musical lethargy” I know very well, I’m so lazy, but when I get into it it’s annoyingly consuming, so after a bout of “creativity” I have a break......for ages  ;D

Oh my goodness me what a surprise to find this here Richard. Thankyou for this beautiful piece of music, you've interpreted the song so well and your playing is so clean, tones pure, timing oh yeah. I'm glad you've found inspiration again, you are such a wonderful musician. I hope this has lit the fire and you keep stoking it. What's next?

I've killed the song with my repeated attempts to play the way I expect of myself. It's lost it's heart and vibe. You have motivated me to get back to it and get it done.

I celebrate you Richard, for all you are.

Thanks Fox.
I was flown over for a job interview - didn't get it or life would have been quite different by now.

OMG.
Now there's a comparison I wasn't expecting - and feel humbled to read.

I hope, one day you’ll share this with the vocals.
It's Mrs B's song & words and she worked up her own version.
I may have to do something of my own with the music.

Yes - ha ha.

Oh my goodness me what a surprise to find this here Richard.
I have had it stored on my computer for several moths - got busy and forgot about it.
I found it again yesterday when searching for something else.

  What's next?
Playing with Mrs C hopefully at some open mic acoustic nights.
Maybe a little recording over the summer when I have some time off work.

re: the visit to Guernsey.

I visited to attend a job interview at the only senior school on the island. I spent a day and a half there with some time to explore. On the 1st day it was glorious weather and after some time exploring St Peter Port, I found a lovely hotel with a large terrace bar overlooking the harbour.
It was early evening, the sun was still strong and I fancied a refreshing drink, a cheeky wee cigar and the cooling sea breeze upon me. So, furnished with a chilled lager in a tall glass, continental style, a long cigar and a cheap lighter I found a quiet seat looking down to the crystal blue ocean. Heaven. Bliss.
 8) :)
The drink was nectar. The view was exquisite. The vibe was perfect.
Except for one thing.
The cheap lighter I bought at the bar wouldn't give me a flame.
 >:(
After repeated attempts I put it down on the table in frustration and took a long draught of lager.
Someone waving their hand at me a few tables away caught my eye and attention.
He was holding up a lighter and motioning to throw it in my direction.
Woah.
It was only Ian Botham.
Jeez.
 :o
A sporting hero from my childhood years watching the Ashes on TV.
Ian Botham.
And he had noticed my predicament and was going to toss a lighter my way to help me out.
Then he did.
And I was so distracted I dropped the catch.
I dropped a catch from Ian Botham!
Unbelievable.
I wished for a hole to open up and swallow me whole.
Oh my - the embarrassment of it.

Definitely prefer the version without the engine noise. Beautiful playing. Curious what the lyrics were, to see how you interpreted them into an instrumental. That sounds like it would be the skill required to compose for film. Maybe you have another calling.

Hi Richard,

Your music seems so apt for the video. I flicked between watching and just listening, and it really does give that feeling of someone departing, or the end of something. Definitely one for movie end credits. Perhaps not a Marvel movie. :D

Beefy was an hero of mine too. Absolute legend on and off the pitch.

Really nice playing. Sounds great just stripped down like that.

I prefer the version without the engine too. Beautiful piece - it stands be itself - don't think it needs a vocal - although I am very curious about the words that inspired it.

Thanks for the re-mix, Richard.  I'm with the crowd here ... better without the engine synth background.

Look forward to hearing what you may do with it, as it is a lovely peaceful piece.

That is fairly solid opinion. I reckon I shall delete or just make private the 1st version.

That is entirely up to Mrs B. They are her words, not mine, to publish.
I can fully understand the interest.

How well you've matched the lyrics to your own experience Richard. Spot on. You clever, very clever.

Very much looking forward to what comes next from you. So much talent, we and the world gotta hear it.

What a funny, endearing story Richard. I imagine you must have puffed up big clouds of smoke on that ceegar, clouds big enough to hide in.
