Go by feel or try to transcribe rhythm

This question is to gather some insight on how you approach playing the rhythm on a song.

I'm learning "My, My, Hey Hey" by Neil Young (on acoustic). I was able to just get a feel for a strumming pattern for the song and play it well enough but I couldn't help but want to look in to how he's actually strumming since I felt like mine was a little repetitive. I transcribed his strumming pattern as best I could, and it's pretty awesome to see the difference and how it goes with the song. Next thing I want to do is transcribe my own strumming to see the difference.

Is this just crazy or actually helpful?

It is actually very helpful. Let your ears be your guide.
Neil has a very distinct and rhythmic style and you can learn a lot
from his style.

Absolutely.  Harvest was my dad's favourite album and o learned every song on that album and many that weren't like hey hey my my when I was in high school.   Over the years I've not stopped playing those songs.   Neil Young is an exceptionaly good musician.

I've always picked up the rhythm of songs by feel, that's one of the cool parts about playing guitar imho.   I realize I got the heys and Mys back to front but I couldn't be bothered going back.   Rock on
