Modded: New tele pickups and a four-way switch
« on: June 24, 2019, 02:17:38 am »
I think this is my first post in the DIY forum. My guitars and amps were all bought with the expectation of never having to do mods. So what did I go and do? I modded my tele with new pickups and a four-way switch.

So many choices for pickups, it could have been a huge rabbit hole, but I went with BYO Twisters, which are vintage tele pickups. I need to do some final height adjustments yet though.

For the four-way switch, I was going to go with the pricey no-solder Obsidian model but went with a better value switch requiring soldered connections. If I had to do it over again I would chosen the Obsidian. I haven't soldered anything for many years, so it took longer than it should have.

Problem: The jack plate on the original three-way switch had a different thread than the new jack. Expected delivery for the new jack plate is this week.

Revelation: Guitars are not that complicated.

So what prompted the mod, Clint.  You always sound great to me, across the variety of genres and tones you've explored.

I suppose like many things, guitars might be pretty complicated until you figure it all out.  At this stage, I don't see myself getting stuck into DIY mods.  Never say never but thought of having to understand wiring diagrams, learn how to solder etc ... rather pay my friendly luthier a visit :)

Good for you on the mod.  Now, what about a few pictures of all this not-so-complicated wiring etc?

Thanks @DP, I've never been shy about sharing stories, pictures, videos or sound clips. :)

The fourth position of a four-way switch turns both single coil pickups into a humbucker. This gives even more versatility to a tele. I can cover a lot of ground with this rig. I put in new pickups in case I ever want to revert back to original. Right now I don't ever see that happening, as there is a huge upgrade in tone.

;D  And enjoy all the videos, recordings and pictures, Clint.

4th position sounds interesting.  I'll wait patiently for a video of you putting the guitar through its paces  ;)

Funny that I've been on a bit of an acoustic run lately. Should have something up soon. I've got my eye on a couple of backing tracks for the demo.
