2019 Cover #22 (Learning To Fly)
« on: June 11, 2019, 05:05:39 pm »
Thought this one should be easy with just four chords, but it's a tricky one, quick changes which I struggle a bit with and tough to sing (too high for my vocal range which makes the singing sound bad).

Maybe easier with some other fingerings for F and G but for me the big barre F and four finger G is the easiest right now. Maybe not my best performance, but good training for quick changes.

You got the vibe, Johan. Maybe not perfect but you're fully committed and giving it a full go, which makes for an enjoyable rendition.  Well done.

Johan,
I was anxious to listen to this because now and then, I'll knock this song off too. You're right that it is deceiving because of the quick changes. It's also a fairly long song. I play it with the up strokes you are demonstrating but sometimes I'll play it with all downstrums too.

I agree with David that you really nailed the vibe of this Petty classic. I really enjoyed this one Johan.

Well played, Johan.  If it's too high for your vocal range, what about playing it in E?

Thanks David, hilts and sunjamrblues. It's a great song and I am glad that I managed to catch the vibe of it. The playing is ok but can be improved. Singing is tricky in is one.

Hilts: Yeah could be a good idea to play it with downstrums only. I will try that. Maybe I'll try to mix up the strumming a bit since its sounds quite the same all the way through.

sunjamrblues: Yeah I need to transpose the song since I struggle with the high notes. I think this song is in the key of C (a 4-1-6-5 progression). To transpose it to E would make the chord progression A-E-C#m-B which is tricky to play for me, with those fast changes. I'll try it though. I guess a capo on 4th fret would work also to transpose it to E...

Key of G would maybe a better alternative (C-G-Em-D). I'll try both.

Thought you did a great job on this one. I think the singing sounded pretty good. I know you said it's a little too high for you, but it doesn't sound like you're straining too much. I think that's normal with a new song that pushes your boundaries. I think your range will grow because of it. Loved the strumming pattern.

I have to admit being disappointed with this-
I was expecting to hear you covering my heroes, Pink Floyd, with the eponymous song from their Momentary Lapse of Reason album.
I have (or rather had) a love/hate relationship with Mr. Petty's music, but you pulled this off well.
Congrats.
Maybe a Floyd tune, if you run out of inspiration?  ;)

It sounded good, especially as you only have a week to practice it.
You look a lot more relaxed now when compared to the first few weeks

Thanks Lynn, Brian and Jono!

Lynn: Extra thanks for the feedback on the singing. Means a lot coming from a good singer like you :) I think the singing slowly gets better, but its difficult with those higher notes (above C4).

Brian: Yeah I know about the Pink Floyd song, but have to admit I never heard it. Request on a PF song is noted, but I have to admit I am not a fan, I think I need to listen to them some more.

Jono: Glad to hear things are improving, its pretty cool having these 22 videos and to be able to look back and compare.

Johan,

Personally PF is a mixed bag for me.  But Wish You Were Here is a classic.  It sounds great on acoustic, Justin has some lessons.  Maybe consider that one for a future Cover.  If you need inspiration, take a listen to this rendition ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=dvOe7q5MDOw  Less inspirational, or maybe more depending how you look at it, I managed an adequate version, so sure you could get it down ...

Nice rendition. You went full bar "F" and four-finger open "G", and pulled it off nicely. Like what you did here.

Johan, Nice job of this one.  I didn't think the vocal was stretched all that much.  You can always try bringing it down an octave, but I think with more vocal practice you could hit this spot on.   Guitar sounds good, too.  Congrats on another week posted  ;D.
