2019 Cover #20 (Torch Singer)
« on: May 29, 2019, 09:54:18 pm »
#20 is a cover of a song from Boston-based indie rock group Buffalo Tom. From the album "Big Red Letter Day" released in 1993. Great song, great album and a great band. Not sure if I captured the vibe of the original but I did my best. Very simple chords in this one but a bit tricky to sing. As usual some more dynamics would lift it I think, I tried to the vary the volume of guitar and vocals in different section, but it sounds quite the same throughout the song.

Johan,

never heard of the band/song but that didn't stop me from liking this very much. I thought your vocal and strumming was very good. I've come to expect that now from you.  ;)

I'm going to check out this band. Congrats on hitting video # 20. You're close to half-way now.

Excellent,  Johan, you are sounding so good.

Playing is relaxed. Looked similar to some of those Oasis songs you like in terms of chords, which must help that. Strumming is smooth. I watched closely,  I really like the quick wristy strums mixed with the slightly heavier accented strums with more arm movement.  You do this ever so well. Liked the arpegiated ending and percussive hits with right hand.

Singing sounded fine. Impressive that you can learn lyrics of so many songs ... no song sheet, right?

Well done on the year's 20th.

Thanks David and hilts.

Hilts: Good vibes for listening and commenting to my weekly posts. Glad you liked this one. Yeah you should check out Buffalo Tom. The singles collection from 2000 is a good first listen. New album from 2018 is ok but not their best one.

David: Thanks for the lovely feedback on my strumming. Yes the chord progression is very "Oasisesque" which helps. About the lyrics, no I don't use a song sheet. I am not sure why, but its usually not a problem for me remembering lyrics. Of course I need to practice the lyrics, but I usually learn them quite fast and once I've learned I usually don't forget the words. With that said, of course I screw up sometimes, this video was not shot in one take.

20 already WOW

You're doing great and getting better at everything ... strumming, singing, consistency, recognising strengths and points to improve.
More good vibes.

Don't know the song Johan but thought you played it confidently....performance really warms up as you go through the song.. nice tone and playing on the guitar too.

Richard: Good vibes to you for following my weekly posts! Means a lot with your support. Glad to hear I am improving. Thats the main reason for doing all these covers.

Rossco: Thanks for listening, glad you liked the performance and the guitar tone.

Next song is gonna be a Swedish one, where I will try to use some more dynamics. Change up the strumming and try to vary the volume of the playing and singing. We'll see if it works, it is still difficult for me.  Incorporating more dynamics is more of a long term project and I see it as the next step in my guitar journey.
