I need help with choosing a guitar size!
« on: April 07, 2019, 11:31:27 pm »
I'm 16, about 4'11, so I've got short arms and small hands.. I've hardly ever played guitar before. I don't know what size acoustic guitar I need. I know that the lessons on this site say full size. But will I actually be able to play comfortably? There's no shops around me and I don't know anyone with a guitar. So I need opinions.

A good size for you would be a 00 they are a small body guitar and very comfortable.
If at all possible try and get one with a 24.75 scale. The tension on the strings will
be less.
Don't buy a travel guitar or 3/4 size.

Good advice from stitch.

You may also see guitars referred to as 000, parlour size, folk size. All of these are smaller bodied.

Dreadnought is the 'norm' and may be big for you . Jumbo is bigger. Avoid both if in doubt.

Guitars labelled as 3/4 are usually cheap, budget low-cost guitars described as 'beginners' but really not at all worthwhile.

I'm 5"2 and I got a Taylor Gs mini which I think is 5/8.

I love it as size wise it's perfect for me, but I'll add a caveat. Once you really get into guitar, you're going to want another one. I have an electric fender strat, and it took me MONTHS to get used to the longer neck and bigger frets. Like 6 months.

So you'll have a set back if you add to you're collection later.

LH Fender Squier Stratocaster (60s vibe)
VOX Pathfinder Amp

This is exactly why Justin recommends starting with a full size guitar and not a travel
or 3/4 size. GS minis are travel size. It's easier to go from a full scall to small guitar
than the other way as you have discovered.

That being said full size don't mean Dreadnought or Jumbo. There are lots of small body
Guitars to choose from that have a full lenght scale. I prefer 24.75" scale over 25.5" scale.

My last guitar purchase was a parlour sized acoustic (basically 7/8). It's a nice size.
