Gentle On My Mind (Glenn Campbell cover finger picked)
« on: March 17, 2019, 07:53:43 pm »
Gentle On My Mind..  Written by John Hartford and of course made famous my Glenn Campbell.

Started building this at an incredibly slow 60 bpm.  After a few weeks I think I'm ready to share  :)

Looking pretty good, Sweed, definitely well on the way.  Impressive feat to be able to keep the left hand, right hand going so smooth and consistent throughout, while singing.  And you did a fine job of the vocal, laid back and relaxed.  Accomplishment to be pretty pleased about, I'd say.

Hey, Sweed, I really enjoyed that. Very relaxing vibe going on. I truly admire your finger style playing. I can picture you on stage entertaining. Really nice.
I’m with you on working something up from 60 BPM. I’m just finishing up one that I started at 60. It was agonizing🤪.

Hey guys thanks for taking the time to listen and comment  :)

@ David,

Lots of practice finally resulted in some consistency. After about 8 weeks of practice I was able to play with some confidence and getting the guitar close to being on automatic as of Friday evening  ;)  Singing along on this song actually makes it easier to stay in rhythm.  There's so much going on with the fingers that it's easy to lose my spot, singing helps me keep focus on just where I'm at.

@ oldhead

Thanks appreciate the kind words, especially on the finger style.  It took some time to lock in on the pattern and count even at the slow 60 bpm.  You come up with a good word, "agonizing" to describe the experience  ;)

S for Sweed, S for smooooooth. You've captured the fluid movement Sweed and your voice provides  a solid anchor for the stream of guitar sounds as they ripple over the stones. Your practise has paid off. This is most pleasing to mah ears.

I'm not familiar with this particular song (I don't really know many Glenn Campbell songs to be honest). I had a good listen to your cover and then had a look over on YouTube for the original and on the version I found he plays at a million miles an hour! I prefer your slowed down take as I feel it lets the song breathe and let me truly digest and appreciate what I was listening to.

Along with your vocal you made that guitar sing too all the time whilst making it look extremely easy in your performance. A really nice song to listen to and watching you perform so effortlessly and fluidly has left me in awe. :)

Or, like she said!

It just needs more banjo like the original. ;D

@ batwoman

Thanks for listening and your kind words.  It's always fun reading your posts, you have such a creative way of expressing yourself.  I think you should write some songs  8)

@ Pilgrim

It was a huge song back in the day and Campbell was about as good as it gets on guitar.  That was 40 some years ago so not surprised that you have'n't heard it.
Thanks for your kind words and while a banjo is not in the works I've started to tinker with an electric guitar version.  Though I can't promise anything will come of it, we'll see.

@Loefgren

Thanks for listening and commenting.  Finger style is a lot of fun but it takes many repetitions to ingrain it to where you no longer think about what you're doing.  It's kind of like riding a bike, you just keep trying and crashing until you suddenly don't.   ;)

Looking ultra comfortable and fluent there Sweed. The playing just seems to flow which is how it should be. I'm sure you've had to practice plenty to get to this stage so well done.

Nice vocal as well. Perhaps need to boost the volume of the recording a little. Always difficult I know to get the balance right.

Very nice --you stylized it! You added a bit of a "lilt" with your vocals that makes it truly unique and all yours. Playing was smooth and steady as well. Cudos all the way around.

Sweed,
Great cover. I remember this when it came out and I think you did a nice take on it. It had a nice laid back feel and like CT said, the "lilt" really gave it a personality.
Cheers,
Glen

I’ve always loved this song and you’re doing great on this. I love the nice relaxed picking with the continued emphasis on the high e, your deep voice is nice and rich against it.

Really nice playing. It must be really hard to play like that at this speed and sing too at same time. I really enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere too.
Thumb up for me ;)

Hey Sweed, respect! Nice song. That finger picking thing, I’ve tried it, it ain’t easy, you make it look easy! And singing as well! It sounds just great. I’m interested to know roughly how many hours did it take to get that smooth with the picking?

@ mari

Thanks. I've always loved this song too, I'm glad you liked it.

@ Cagn  Thanks for the thumbs up.  Very hard at first but with lots of practice it finally falls into place.

@ b1rdland

Thanks for the kind words.  The hardest part of finger picking for me is getting used to the finger picks.  I wish I could grow nails, and not break them at work, and not have to use the picks.  I spent enough time on this that the picks almost feel normal.  How many hours?  Well, I started in mid January, practiced everyday 'til now.  I'd guess somewhere around 65 hours  :o  Most of that time was getting the tempo up and still be able to keep the pattern going.  I credit Justin's courses that taught me if I start slow, build it over time, and stay the course I will eventually get there.

Wow very sweet Sweed! Still blows me away looking at all them pics and knowing it would wipe me out even thinking about trying to get all the fingers moving in some sort of 'audible' way! Nice work my man! You have a nice balance on the mix I think. I hear no thumb pick noise on this, nice work there.

Can't say much more as you have it covered very well, so to speak.

So what is next on your end? You going to keep on this roll of being a multi pick guy?

You take care and I really liked the work you put in on this one!

Nicely done Sweed.

Get thumb and fingers working together and synced is a real achievement.

Sweed

That's some sweet picking going on there my friend. Boy the whole thing looks really comfortable and smooth and a good vocal delivery. Great job on an old classic.

Cheers

@ LBro

Thanks appreciate your comments.  Yeah, the pick noise seems to sort itself out the more I play.  Very slight changes in hand position have helped, most of that done without consciously thinking about it.  Just kind of happens.  I do like finger picking so yeah, if I can find something I want to try sure.  But like most of us there is a lot of things I want to play and I have had a couple songs in mind that don't use finger picks.  So certainly will do more just not sure how soon.

Wow! A lot of hours. It’s been worth it though, you’ve put the work in and it’s paid off. One thing I’ve learned in my 5 years with the guitar is that something that looks so far out of reach technically can be achieved if you’re prepared to graft - you prove it with your picking. Well done!
