Tompkins Square Park - Mumford and Sons Cover
« on: March 08, 2019, 03:53:00 pm »
Been so long since I recorded or posted anything so here goes. Really haven't had the time to set-up mic, mixer, nice webcam etc. etc. etc. so thought Id do a back to basics recording of this song on my iPhone just to get back into it. It's a new song so that's a positive.

Hadn't really listened to the Wilder Minds album until a couple of weeks ago and haven't stopped playing it since. It's a bit of slight shift for M&S in terms of style but a very nice album. I particularly liked this song so thought I'd give it a go.

The chords are mostly straight forward C, AM, EM, G, DM and of a course an F (which you can play in a easy way). The tricky part with this song is the strumming which is basic in pattern (mainly up and down) but fairly quick with the aim to try and do a bit a percussive hit as well. When I started on this last week I was struggling but its slowly getting there. The other trivky bit is fitting the vocals to the tune! but that just takes practice.

You might need to pump the volume up a little.

Hope you enjoy.

That was enjoyable, Rossco.

I particularly liked some of the dynamics that you brought at points, quietening the guitar.

And during the portion with single strums got to appreciate your voice. Sounded pretty so would be nice to hear recording done differently to get a better balance between guitar and voice.

But glad you made this one. I can't recall if I heard you before.

Only observation I can make is on posture. Look a bit hunched over the guitar. May benefit the singing to be more upright and probably other plusses as well.

Look forward to more and go well in the exam if it still lies ahead.

Never listened to Mumford and Sons, this is a really cool song. You have a fine voice and a great sense of rhythm, those accents on the strumming drive the rhythm along nicely. I agree with David re the posture, it will help your fingering in the long term if you free up that left arm a bit. Good stuff!

Hey Rossco,  it's been awhile, you're sounding good  :)

Haven't heard this song before, it's a good one, I like it a lot.

Guitar very good, strumming with the percussive hit very effective.  Had me tapping my foot.  Despite having to overcome the mic placement it is a great vocal in the old clear strong voice I remember, really well done.   I hope a future balanced recording will be coming?

Cheers guys as always appreciate the feedback. Yeah its not a great recording and I know that but wanted to get this one down and posted as I been working on it a couple of weeks and just about got the fluidity you need.

@DavidP I used to post quite a lot on here so I suspect you probably have heard me. If not feel free to have a browse of my YT and Soundcloud (although I've cleansed this a little as I've dropped the Pro account) most of it is a bit old but you get a sense of where I've come from.

@B1rdland I'd recommend checking out M&S if you like this one. They made their breakthrough with quite a folky/Uke sound (no electric guitars at all). Really intelligent lyrics on most of their songs so can certainly recommend if you liked this one.

@Sweed77 So good to hear from you again and glad you liked this one. I'm trying to keep a presence but doubt I'll be quite as active on here as I once was.

I have spent some time getting most of my recording kit set-up tonight. I spent quite a bit of time previously getting a "one shot recording setup" to avoid any DAW work (which I used to enjoy but can do without now) it works well but I've not used it for recording for a while and need to it setup with my new laptop. Gave it a quick run through and needs a little tweaking but should be ready to go over the weekend so will try and knock up a new version then.

Hey Rossco, so glad you dropped by. Man you got the music in you, there's no doubt about that. It's there, inherent, expressed, expressive, makes me sit up and listen attentively and with great appreciation.

You were right, Rossco, when I checked SC turns out I was following you  :D

Took the opportunity to take in a couple on SC and YT...really enjoyable. I think your singing in the songs I listened to was excellent,  over smooth playing.

Great way to start my Saturday.

Thank you @batwoman and @davidp for listening.

So got all my little recording set-up going again today and re-recorded in a much more clear and balanced way!  ;D

Thanks for re-posting Rossco.  Certainly richer tones on this take.

For my taste I'd like the level of your vocal lifted up a little.  My feeling is that on these songs the voice is primary, especially when the singer is as good to listen to as you are.

From a gear perspective, are you recording with two mics, can't quite see what that is level with the soundhole.

Now I am definitely looking forward to more from you.  :D

Bravo, that was just so good Rossco  8)

Yeah, I don't get here nearly as much as I'd like either.  A lot of quick in and outs to read,  try to comment as much as I can, and get a song posted now and then too.

It is good to see an old familiar face.  Take care  :)

@DavidP Thanks for the positive feedback. Difficult on the mix front. Quite easy to overwhelm the song with vocal. In terms of set-up vocal is via a shure mic which goes into my TC Helicon Harmony for tone, dess and some reverb only and then into my behringer mixer. The guitar is an electric acoustic and that is going straight into the mixer. Camera is a logitech C920. Camera and mixer go into my Surface Pro and I'm just using the logitech camera software for the capture.

Its a nice easy, repeatable set-up. I used to do a lot using Ableton (which is excellent) but tried to streamline it a lot early last year to speed up the process and move towards YT from audio only (SC is very expensive once you've used the free minutes).

The TC Helicon Harmony is an excellent little box even if you only use the tone settings. I've looked at their other vocal pedals but all are quite a lot more expensive, have too many or not enough features. If you can half sing they make a difference.

@Sweed77 Good to hear you still visit and look forward to hearing more of your songs.

Thanks for the details,  Rossco.

I'm with you on the challenge of getting guitar and vocal balance in a sweet spot. I think I am finally in the ballpark after making many recordings over the last 9 months or so. Trick was getting a dynamic mic that tracks the vocal with limited guitar bleed in. When I started I had just a condensor and got a track that was a combo, with guitar louder, despite all I tried. Now I use the two mics and am getting a decent recording and mix.

I started on Ableton and the moved to Reaper when I stsrted needing more tracks than the lite version allowed. And as you say, have got a setup now that is quite repeatable in terms plugins on tracks and master bus. But must say, I like the sound of how you make your videos. Should I want to move to videos, that sounds like a smart way to do it, assuming one could route from Reaper into the video software. Though I guess latency may be too severe and mess up the video-audio sync.

That Helicon device looks pretty cool as well. I guess ideal to feed into a 2 channel acoustic amp for solo performances. But I'm not near wanting to do more than play and record at home.

Once again, thanks for sharing, both info and your music.

Rossco

For starters hiya pal good to see  you back. Have only the first couple of M&s albums and must have missed this in 2015 but heck been a bit busy. Loved playing Little Lion Man during the BC but the on line version seems to have disappeared. Listening to the OT thought you got this down well. The first recording swamped the vocals a little but the 2nd was more balanced. Suggest you dump the phone and get Albeton cranked up assuming you're still using that puppy. Anyways good boomerang track, its good to be back.

Cheers

Toby

Cheers Toby and good to hear from you again. Yeah Ableton is great and if you want polished its the way to go. The plugins for mastering etc. are great and make a real difference. But I really want the one shot approach i.e. record video and audio same time then post. so I'll keep tweaking what I've got for now.

I'm away in Paris for few days with work this week so not a lot of time for practice or doing anything guitar wise. I've picked up Lead 1 course and flying through that at the moment. I've covered most of it independently in the last 6 months but its still good to go through the course as there are always some nuggets from Justin that are good (if nothing else the licks I haven't covered are good to learn). Suspect I'll cross that one off with another weeks work. Also completing the theory side of things and finding it a lot easier now. Always plenty to be doing!
