Original Song - "100 Years From Now"
« on: March 05, 2019, 07:01:29 pm »
My latest effort “100 Years From Now” - I read an old newspaper article at the weekend about people who were asked in 1888 what they thought England would be like in 100 years (you can find it on indy100.com). Some of the responses were pretty accurate, others were quite old school sci-fi. I liked some of the words so much I thought I’d put them in a song. The first verse is lifted verbatim from one of the responses. I added my own view of what life will be like 100 years from now in the other verse.

(“March of Progress” is that picture of the evolution of man from ape to human)

100 years from now
No gas
Vehicles and homes made of paper
Magneto-petrolo fires
Intellectual, self-acting pyro-aqua vengeance bombs.

100 years from now
No gas
Wired to computers, thought transmission
No trees
Chemical warfare, robots, obese..
Population
No cancer, lonely isolation - HEAT

Can you tell me what’s changed?
Can you tell me what’s changed?

The poor are still poor
And war is still war
March of progress….?

100 years from now
No gas
Vehicles and homes made of paper
Magneto-petrolo fires
Intellectual, self-acting pyro-aqua vengeance bombs.

100 years from now
No gas
Wired to computers, thought transmission
No trees
Chemical warfare, robots, obese..
Population
No cancer, lonely isolation - HEAT

Can you tell me what’s changed?
Can you tell me what’s changed?

The poor are still poor
And war is still war
March of progress….?

Another polished production, Steve. Smooth laid back vibe, liked the vocal delivery, the drums...ok all of it.

Had another listen to Tell the Bees...sound like they come from the same album.

Another really nice jazzy groove going on. Yeah, those drums! Love em! Smooth and super pleasing to the senses. Great job Steve!

Good stuff, b1rdland. Very experimental, jazzy, with (very appropriately) dark undertones.
Also great mix, well done.

Hey birdland - wow, you're on a roll! Interesting lyrics, though I'm not the dystopian kind of guy  ;D
Really liked the drums and the break at ~1:35 :)

Edit: PS & OT: Soundcloud chose to play 'I Wish I'd Taken A Photograph' right afterwards - that was very cool :)

Ah cheers Max  ;D I will keep rolling I think until I hit a bumpy bit or some long grass  ;D Yeah the drums, I'm really into the 12/8 rhythm at the moment, it sets a mood and is quite exciting.
'I wish I'd taken A Photograph' yeah that's a few years old and needs some EQ work (I'm not very good at that, so I've left it) My friend Jo is singing and boy she can sing! I had the cheek to ask her to do backing vocals  ;D ...backing me haha - she agreed though and she makes the track IMHO.

Nice, I can see it fitting into a movie soundtrack.
The ending is a bit abrupt though.

Bird

Don't where you find it but stick right where you are in this groove. Your tracks are hypnotic and this one follows that vein. Loved that spacey jazzy feel and your lyrics are spot on.

Was a big Marvin Gaye fan back in the day and I'll listen to some of his what I'd call protest songs but no one else did and think sheet 40 years on and nowt changed at all and in fact its all a lot worse.

This style is needed for both your mellowness and bringing folks attention to the messed up world we live in. If I weren't playing most nights to find sanity and sanctuary, I'd probably give up on it all.

Great inspirational track.  8)

Loving this pared back, spacious stream in which you flow Steve. Leaves so much room for thought, pondering possibilities. Particularly like the haunting, at times unsettling qualities of your voice.

Toby, I know exactly where you’re coming from, “Sanity and sanctuary” are things I get from playing, just from picking up the guitar and hearing a chord ring out. The guitar is like a good friend, to have a conversation with, it’s kept me going, it’s a focus and a passion, albeit annoying and frustrating at times! Some people I know don’t get it, their loss I reckon. Keep Rockin’ man (or bluesin’ or jazzin’)  ;D
