Zoom MS50G - MultiFX Stomp Box
« on: February 27, 2019, 03:44:00 pm »
So this is just a little plug for the Zoom MS50G stomp box. It's been out for quite a while (like 3+ years at least) and the original model came with around 50 effects and was released at the same time as another of their pedals MS70CDR (Chorus, Delay, Reverb). They also had a model where you add additional effects that they released via app and you upload via Bluetooth.

Well I already have a Zoom G5 (original one not the 5n) floor unit but was looking for something with a smaller footprint. The MS50G came up because it appears that at the end of 2017 (no one quite knows why) Zoom provided a firmware update that allowed you to load any of the 150 effects available for it the other various stomp box models, onto the MS50G (at the same time they also made all models in the app for the Bluetooth version free).

At around £75 it's absolute bargain and the effects are pretty good. It's great for anyone looking to start with effects and cheaper than most individual pedals. You get more effects than were on the original G3/G5 models although the compromise is that it's not as flexible in terms of patch/stomp selection (you've only got one button). That said it's perfectly manageable, can be battery operated and has a tiny footprint.

Google YouTube there are some good videos on it!

I got rid of mine as you could only go forward through the patches, I still regret letting it go.
It is a very good little box.

Definitely a limitation but probably difficult to work around given the size of the box. It does cycle through patches but if you had lot it would be challenging. I'm not gigging with it or anything so it's not a big limitation. Would have been nice if they'd allowed a port for a footswitch but guess that would have eaten into there other G3/G5 platforms. In all honesty I'm finding more and more a a patch per song is at most what I need with a stomp if necessary to boost/drive.

For ambient effects the shimmer reverb and others get very close to Strymon type effects.

Still use my old Zoom GFX707 once in a blue moon

They seem to make reliable kit as I have had mine for around 20 years !
