2019 Cover #7 (Closing Time)
« on: February 16, 2019, 10:03:57 am »
Ok time for some power chords and a great rock song from the 90's.

When playing power chords or bar chords I need to look down at the frets so not much interaction with the camera in this one. The timing on the single strums is a bit off and need more work otherwise I think it went pretty well? But I need someone to play the solo for me  :)

I have a tendency to "bend" the strings upwards when playing power/bar chords which I also need to work on.

Good on you for keeping to your recording schedule Johan. Fantastic effort.
On an acoustic power chord song it makes a huge difference if you vary the dynamics …

try 8th note chugging all down strums in sections …
try palm muted quieter chords in sections …
:)

Good job, Johan.

I think you are doing really well with the strumming here, maintaining steady rhythm and targeting either just a couple of strings or a fuller strum.

Three cheers for #7 !!

Johan, Seven down.  That's an accomplishment in itself.  Thought you did pretty well on this, but would echo what Close said about dynamics, just something to change it up a little bit.   Overall good job, and looking forward to No. 8.

Sounded good to me. I didn't notice timing issues or bends on the power chords, I'm easily pleased.

Thanks Lieven, Richard,  David, Dave, jono and Pam!

Richard and Dave: Thanks for the advice on adding some dynamics. I am working on it but my palm mutes does not sound very good. Also difficult changing between palm mutes, 8ths and normal strumming etc. But I think it will come with more practice time. I see it as the next step for me. Maybe on cover #40...

Jono: The unintentional bending is not so bad, but its an indication of that my technique is a bit sloppy. Very good for me making all this videos, they reveal what I need to work more with.

Sorry heard this the other day and forgot to comment. Don't know the original I'm afraid. Didn't notice any bending. Seemed pretty clean to me. Well done going for the falsetto bit in the choruses.

My 'Same Musical Tastes' brother from another mother! Another enjoyable cover to listen to and as already mentioned, kudos for keeping to your recording schedule target.

Will I approve of #8 song choice? Who knows... but more importantly, who cares! Keep 'em coming dude. :)

A lot of great feedback and comments. You're heading in the right direction. I have to echo @close2u's suggestion above. Get your foot stomping to the beat and try some variations while staying in time. We all struggle with staying in time, and you're doing really well with it. Great effort!

Johan, I would echo the dynamics points. Sounded great, the vocal was very very good, you’re hitting the high notes bang on. Quite a vocal range you’ve got. Guitar work was sound. Well done!
How about an XTC tune for the next one........if you’re taking requests?  ;D

Thanks Garfield, Pilgrimpod, CT and b1rdland!

Lots of great advice on dynamics and muted strumming. I will focus more on that and hopefully I can use it in some coming songs.

Pilgrimpod: Cool that we seem to have similar taste in music. #8 is a swedish song so you may not enjoy that one, but there will be songs from Oasis, Green Day, Nirvana, Blur etc. coming up during the year so I am sure you like some coming songs.

B1rdland: Thanks for the nice words about singing, if I can hit some right notes I am more than happy. XTC maybe I have not listened to them very much...

Great song choice for #7 Johan. You're doing a good job on the bar chord changes. It looks like this one is stretching you a bit and that's a good thing, it can be quite a workout to play bar chords through an entire song. You have the overall vibe down, and you'll get more comfortable as you play it more. Maybe a version 2 of this one in a future week, as you get more comfortable and start to incorporate more dynamics?

Thanks for posting,

Thanks Mari, yes I probably re-record this one, when i have some more dynamics in my "guitar register".

Very easy listening Loefgren. Sounded good and yes it would be better if you varied things a little on the strumming but still a nice recording.

:D no problem. Glad you enjoyed my posts. Back at least for now will update my roadcase rather than here and see if I can record something shortly. The good thing is I've never stopped playing.
