2019 Cover #5 (Live Forever)
« on: February 02, 2019, 02:00:35 pm »
Ok it's time for an Oasis cover. Done this a few times before (I think it was the first song I posted in AVOYP more than 2 years ago). I think it went pretty well except for the falsetto part which is very difficult to sing. Sounds out of tune to me, it should be sang much "softer" but can't do that. Would be better to skip it maybe.

I tried to play and sing the song in the original key, but that didn't work at all, chorus is way to high. Here I use the capo on 4th and sing almost an octave lower I think.

Posture is pretty bad but I'm sitting on a couch here without any footstool so its pretty difficult to sit straight.

New strings on the Yamaha, think they sound pretty good. Also better acoustics in this room compared to where I normally record. The background noise you can hear is from the TV...

Ah-ha ... now I'm getting it here, no more error message.

Once again, well done Johan, I really enjoy your Oasis covers, you've got great feel in your playing and singing when you play those songs.  I guess that is your love of the songs coming through.

And hats off, 5 in succession ... you are rocking that plan.

Johan, I get the feeling that you are an Oasis fan!  I think you did well with this.  And it seems I detected some attitude in your voice with a little more dynamics.  Good for you on going for those high notes, too.
I'm definitely becoming a fan.  Good vibes to you on No. 5.

Johan

A solid cover sir. Nice adjustment via capo to suit your vocals. Always love playing this but singing it always out of reach, glad you made it.

Cheers

Toby

Thumbs up to no5, I cant wait to see what no52 is like.
The singing is also good, I did smile at the high notes. I don't know where people get the confidence to sing.
The posture is bad though.

Oh yeah, love the development in your voice Johan. Could there be a bad boy waiting to get out? It makes such a difference to your presentation, the quality of your voice when you lift your head and stare us down. I notice when you sit on a sofa to play you tend to hunch a little. Wondering if your posture is better on a chair?

Thanks guys and gals.

I am happy with the guitar on this one. Sure the changes could be tighter and at some places I lose the rhythm a bit (problems with almost dropping the d-mn pick). But overall I think it sounds pretty good. The next step is to try and spice it up a little and make it more interesting with more dynamics and some hammer-ons and rhythm changes, but that will come later with more playing time and getting more comfortable I think. I am trying to build a real solid rhythm playing first.

Singing I really dont know what I am doing I just sing and try do my best, I dont have much confidence, I just sing anyway. The high note here sounds totally wrong to me. Gonna listen even closer to what Liam and Noel are doing and try to imitate it. Very tricky though.

Very nice Johan! :)

One small thing you might want to try out on the high notes at ~3:00 :
When the note you sing ends, close your mouth shortly - this way the note won't be a bit flat when 'ringing out' :)

I'm curious which song comes next :)

An awesome song by an awesome band, based on their first three albums anyway...

I thought this performance had more attitude/confidence/call it what you want... when compared to your other recordings. A really good cover and kudos for having the bottle to have a go at the high notes despite your awareness perfection is not quite there. I applaud the effort in the attempt and equally for sharing. For me, perfection doesn't always equal perfection d'ya know what I mean? I love the honesty in the imperfection of your high notes in this song.

Everything else sounded really good; the vocals, the playing. An ever so slight blip here and there with a loose chord change or possibly the tempo but it's a live performance; it's organic. I seem to always keep saying in AVOYP that singing and playing at the same time is in the realms of wizardry to me right now and your covers fall firmly under that umbrella.

Good vibes mate. :)

Max: Thanks for the advice on the high note, I'll try that. Working on the next song, its also a classic from the 90's, not Oasis though :)

Pilgrimpod: Thanks a lot, yeah its really a fantastic song by a fantastic band. Glad you liked the cover. Its not magic, its just lots of hard work. It has taken me almost three years to get this far. I guess I practice 4-5 hours a week in average, so put in about 750 hours of practice I think most of us can do this. I dont know if my progress is fast or slow but I dont care really, I am having fun.

Good vibes to you for the reply to Pilgrim.  That's a mindset that I think is conducive to learning.

damn I wish I was as productive as you :)

Smooth, steady strumming, chill singing; these oasis songs seem to make you feel a bit at ease or am I mistaken? You seem to read the vibe of these quite well. Good job

You sound like a Lou Reed song might suit you; have you tried that before?

I enjoyed it, Johan. My practice routine and philosophy is similar to yours. So, glad that you are enjoying it all however long it takes, just keep on practicing, playing, & singing.
