2019 Cover #4 (The River)
« on: January 27, 2019, 09:51:24 pm »
The weekly covers continue, I have done this one before but here I try to sing in the original key. Can't hit the high notes in the verses and use some kind of falsetto which need much more work to sound good. Maybe I should use a capo and sing lower, but I'm not sure,  I feel the singing sounds really boring when it it gets to low.

Playing works pretty good, old faithful and cowboy chords, but dynamics could be better. Also I think I speed up a little. Tempo is good in the beginning, but a little fast at the end. Some changes and strums are quite sloppy, but its pretty hard stay consistent for a whole song, so I forgive myself.

Hope you like it

Good job, Johan. I enjoyed that. Well done on keeping it going when there was the odd wobble. Like reading that you forgive yourself...I think that will keep you positive, continuing to learn. Congrats on #4.

Johan, Good for you on No. 4.  Playing is strong, and I just can't believe the difference in your confidence level from early posts.  It's really nice to see your musical growth.  I like the song and your performance; however, I think you should maybe try the capo.  For me the falsetto just sounds unnatural, but good for you for giving it a go.

Thanks David and Dave. I did my best with the vocals but it doesn't sound very good I know. Some notes are too high and cant sing them with my "normal voice". I am not sure, I have no formal vocal training, but I think its the transition from "normal singing" to head voice/falsetto thats need to be much smoother. Also the falsetto is very thin/weak so it sounds odd.

I might try this again with a capo, but to suit my singing, I feel I need to have the capo very high (6th fret or higher) which sounds a bit strange and it is difficult to play. I think it would be better to transpose down the song a few steps, but makes the chords more difficult.

Dave: Glad you can see musical growth. I try to enjoy learning guitar and have fun and I think I have reached the level I aimed for when I started to play guitar. I can quite easily play rhythm to a lot of songs and perform them at an acceptable level. But as you learn you always wanna improve. Still my playing isn't as steady as I would like it to be and I have a lot to work on dynamics and single note playing etc..

dito! Can't really add anything to that :)

Good job Johan!
I think it would be interesting to go back at this song at a later point this year!

Lookin' forward to #5 :)

Johan,

good job with this one. Nice strumming on Old Faithful. Your singing is better than you think. Nice one!

Thanks hilts. I am happy with most of the vocal performance in this one, its the high notes in the verses that's difficult for me (for example: for my 19th birthday, now these memories come back to haunt me). Otherwise I think the key of the song suits my voice pretty good. I might try to transpose down the chords a few steps and see how it works.

Johan, Ace work. Guitar is sound, the majority of the vocal is pretty good too. I took a listen to the original, because I didn't believe Springsteen really sang those high parts, respect to the man though as he does it without much effort, those parts seem pretty tricky to me, you pull most of it off OK though, so Nice One!

Hi Johan,

this took me back to starting work, getting my union card and being stood on a picket line. Shortly afterwards my first was born, although I'd been married a couple of years by then :)

One of my favourite Springsteen songs. Well played and sung, apart from the lack of confidence when singing the high notes, but you knew that already. My advice would be to keep playing and singing the song to build up your confidence. One day you might find the high notes just appear as if by magic. Although you'll know how much work it took to hit them.

Keith: Thanks and cool it brings back some nice memories. I'll keep playing the song and hopefully the high notes will get better with more practice.

B1rdland: Thanks. The Boss may not be ranked as the best singer in rock music, but he can hit some high notes for sure listen to I'm On Fire for example.

Johan, thanks for introducing me to this song. A beautiful, powerful, emotional song. I thought you did well playing and singing. You can carry a tune fine and your playing is good too. I think you will get the high notes better in time. Keep trying and pushing the high notes. They should get stronger as you go hopefully. Great job!
