2019 cover #2 (It's A Shame About Ray)
« on: January 13, 2019, 08:58:58 pm »
Hello! Since some of you wanted me to post weekly here is cover #2 in my project of recording one cover every week in 2019.

I love the Lemonheads and particularly the album released in 1992 with the same name as this song. If you like guitar based pop and simple catchy songs, check the album out.

Very simple song I use only open chords, but the original uses some inversions which I am not ready for yet. The song also includes a small riff between the chorus and the verses but I skipped that since I couldn't make it smooth. Working on it.

Hi Johann.

2 down! Good glad you're doing this. I remember the lemonheads and I had this album though I haven't heard this song for about 20 years maybe longer. It sounds better than I remember. You've really got the feel of this one and the guitar is sounding great.
Keep it up
G

Johan,

Fine performance.  I think you stretched yourself with the vocals there are did well.  Strumming good and steady.  Most enjoyable.

Look forward to cover #3.

Thanks David. Yes it was a stretch pretty hard song to sing, the vocals are a bit strained and need more work to sound good. Wanna get the riff down also. So I am probably gonna work more with this song.

Johan, you look and sound very comfortable and confident, and this was a good listen.  In 2017 I did a post a week until Christmas for about 10 weeks and it helped my playing tremendously.  I think you're on to a good idea here, posting one a week for the year.   Good luck.

Thanks Dave. I am starting to feel more relaxed with the guitar, glad it shows up in my 2019 videos. Some open chords and basic strumming works fine. I am still very limited though and there are a lots of things I wanna improve for sure. I see the project of posting one song a week as a test of my skills so far. Also its loads of fun playing and recording songs.

What a difference in you Johan. The hunching with your eyes glued to the guitar have gone. You're sitting up, looking at us, both arms look relaxed, your shoulders are looser. GOOD JOB.

Thanks David. The tempo is more like the original here, the first version was a bit rushed. It wasn't intentional i just played a bit too fast. Also the vocals arent as strained but I still struggle to make the high notes sound good. Well I am an untrained singer so you have to live with that  :)

Thanks Batwoman. Your nagging about the posture has helped. Playing in the dark is very good. Also it was a bit of a bad habit, so just thinking about it helps to. Getting more comfortable overall helps to of course.

As one untrained singer in the same boat to another: lose no sleep over the quality of your singing, Johan ... you are doing fine and adds to my enjoyment of the performance.

As another untrained singer,  I agree with David, that we can't let our deficiencies hold us back, nor is it useful to get stuck on one aspect of our performance being less than we want.

However, I'd like to offer a different perspective. I hear the human voice as another instrument. We can learn to play and improve it, just as we do with our guitars. When I listen to a recording that includes vocals, if there are pitch problems, for me I'm listening to an instrument that's out of tune. It detracts from the sound.

It's not a reason to stop singing, not at all. For many of us the challenge of learning to play guitar is enough and I get that. I still think it's important to give the voice some attention, even simple things, like learning to breathe better, being aware of pitch problems, posture. This is where I see you make wonderful progress Johan. Glad my nagging paid off  ;D

Thanks jono and pilgrimpod for listening/watching and the nice words about singing and playing.

Batwoman: Very thoughtful insight about singing. And thanks for your encouraging words about posture and breathing.

Johan

Another solid performance. Had to think about the song for a while as it disturbed some grey matter, then realised it was from my daughter early listening but a great track. Covered well in my opinion.

Cheers

Sounding good Johan! I agree that you’re looking more comfortable, you’ll have to look back at the end of the year  and see the impact of a year of videos! I have much less lofty ambitions, 13 songs is my goal, so good luck to you on reaching 52. And good vibes to you on setting such a goal!

Thanks Mari. Maybe 52 songs is to much and quality will suffer for quantity. But I mainly see at as practice and hopefully some of them will turn out as keepers in the long run. Good luck with your goal, I hope you share them with us here on AVOYP.
