Cover // Ballad of Love and Hate - The Avett Brothers
« on: January 08, 2019, 01:35:12 pm »
Hey there :) I hope all of you had a nice first week of the year!

I was busy with some stuff for university lately (though I'm lucky that it has to do with music ;D), but finally  I had some time for recording today. The song I ended up with was a spontaneous decision though^^
hilts' cover of 'I and Love and You' by the Avett Brothers
(https://justinguitarcommunity.com/index.php?topic=44175.msg390324#msg390324)
brought this song back to my attention - thank you hilts :)

(recorded with my new phone)

My TODO-List regarding this song:
- memorize lyrics
- work out picking patterns / further embellishments

Recommended original (live) version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cTJV3HK-Xs

Lyrics:
Love writes a letter and sends it to Hate
"My vacation's ending, I'm coming home late
The weather was fine and the ocean was great
And I can't wait to see you again"

Hate reads the letter and throws it away
"No one here cares if you go or you stay
I barely even noticed that you were away
I'll see you or I won't, whatever"

Love sings a song as she sails through the sky
The water looks bluer through her pretty eyes
And everyone knows it whenever she flies
And also when she comes down

Hate keeps his head up and walks through these streets
Every stranger and drifter he greets
And shakes hands with every loner he meets
With a serious look on his face

Love arrives safely with suitcase in tow
Carrying with her the good things we know
A reason to live and a reason to grow
To trust and to hold and to care

Hate sits alone on the hood of his car
Without much regard to the moon or the stars
Lazily killing the last of a jar
Of the strongest stuff you can drink

Love takes a taxi, a young man drives
As soon he sees her hope fills his eyes
But tears follow after at the end of the ride
Because he might never see her again
Patience, patience, patience

Hate gets home lucky to still be alive
He screams over the sidewalk and into the drive
The clock in the kitchen says 2:55
And the clock in the kitchen is slow

Love has been waiting patient and kind
Just wanting a phone call or some kind of sign
That the one that she cares for who's out of his mind
Will make it back safe to her arms

Hate stumbles forward and leans in the door
Weary head hung down, eyes to the floor
He says, "Love, I'm sorry, " and she says, "What for?
I'm yours and that's it, whatever
I should not have been gone for so long
I'm yours and that's it, forever
Your mine and that's it, forever

Man, I love the Avett Brothers!

Max, I love your performance here. It's just a really lovely version. Really nice gentle sound with the strumming and your voice (as always) is the perfect compliment. Super job my friend!

What a splendid performance, simple, effective and affecting.

I think you do justice to the song and your voice is exactly right.

Thank you for posting and good vibes!

Lovely performance, Max.  Sung and played with such feeling.

So glad you chose to take the time available to record and share, as always a treat.

Hey Max, thanks for sharing this really lovely cover with the rest of us. I found that to be a very emotive performance, akin to a medieval minstrel reciting some tale at court. I'm sure you get what I mean. ;D

Vocal sounded on point as always and the accompaniment of guitar meshed perfectly for a very nice and engrossing performance. :)

Max this was very nice. And thanks for introducing me to the Avett Brothers. Not familiar with them. Love your taste in music. I was also watching your use of the Chord Shapes and how well and at ease you can play them. I’m just now trying to learn them. Recently practiced the D and Dm chord shapes and on to the next ones. Anyway, good job.

I love it, as always. As bummed as I was to hear you say you were going to be done with the Dylan covers for a bit, this is just as pleasurable. Well done!
