Guitar Challenge XXXI - jam over acoustic backing in G
« on: December 13, 2018, 02:49:35 pm »
At the old jam challenge again  ;)

This one is really courtesy of Clint aka CT ... he posted up a jam over this track in AVOYP, titled Strike Another match ... well worth a listen is that.  Mine, less so  :o

https://soundcloud.com/david-preece-24770685/gc-xxxi-20181213

But great fun to spend some time jamming over the track, getting familiarity with notes and scales up and down the neck.

And here's the backing track link: https://youtu.be/lNgx8HpEjHA

I'd encourage you not to be intimidated as beginners, once you reach the point in the BC or Music Theory where you've learned some scales, give it a go ... as I say, great fun and the only way to learn this aspect of guitaring.

Nice go at it DP! Was that with the Blue Beast? This was at its best when you let some notes sustain and when you gave it plenty of space and air.

As DP mentioned here's my take:

Thanks Clint. It was indeed, Vincent Blue Beast  :) Bridge pup as HB and neck as single coil.

You are right about letting notes sustain for longer. Listening back I noticed that as well.

Nice tone you have happening here, David. I really like some of the musical ideas, sounding good. You seem a bit ahead of the beat in places, so I guess listen for that. But overall I like the sounds you’re playing. I really have to get back to practicing soloing, such a lot of fun.

Thanks Mari. It is great fun indeed. When I look at my playing relative the grid then I can see ahead, behind and occasionally on the beat. Also find my start of phrases isnt always on beat 1...not sure if that is a problem or not. Suppose it would depend on the progressions and backing drums.

Thanks Bala

Enjoyed your jam.  I'm guessing this is the new strat ... the tone has some body and grit to it while retaining some of the clarity of the clean notes ... not explaining well, but I like it.  Fine feel and tempo, relaxed and in keeping with the backing.  Fine playing.

Yup this one is the strat. I feel like I need to be showing some love to my Ibanez too at times. But I’m kinda having to part ways with it for a while now ;) this one didn’t use any GB preset. So it’s all strat :) thank you for the listen and comments David!

No stupid questions, Tony.

Short answer "Yes"

Slightly longer answer: the idea of the Guitar Challenges is for somebody to provide a specific challenge that gives folk here a particular objective.  Ideally many people all have a go at the Challenge which leads to more conversation, feedback and learning.  It's in addition to the AVOYP area where an individual posts whatever it is they choose as a topic and get whatever replies they get.  In GC area each Challenge is a topic, so brings specific focus.

You'll see a number of Challenges here all setup to help people practice their improvisation over a backing track.  And participants of all levels are welcome ... as demonstrated by the fact that I have posted up jams and am just getting started with improvisation.

Look forward to hearing your jam soon.

Boy, did I like this a lot David. I let it play in the background while I surfed the Net. Really nice ear candy. Would love to hear more like that.

Thanks Hilts.  There are a bunch of these jam challenges with improvs from a bunch of folk.  Just got to track through the whole topic to find each person's attempt.  I think most of them include an improve by CT, Bala and myself plus some also have from a few others as well.  So at least 3 per challenge and I think maybe 6-7 challenges.

Have fun :)

And then consider joining in, because it is as much fun giving it a go as it is listening.

Tiny amendment / clarification David.

The Challenges are not all improv over backing tracks.

Some of them are simply 'post your cover version' of songs.
And more of those are welcome too.

:)
