I Walk The Line - new Johnny Cash Cover
« on: December 06, 2018, 09:58:29 pm »
Going back and revising some of my regular repertoire songs...so yes, more Johnny Cash :-) I tried to do this in a similar style to how I did Ghost Riders in the Sky, as I really liked how that came out. Also, first time in doing the bass-note strumming thing on this song. Played all the way through in the key of A, as Justin does in his lesson.

What do you think?

You look so much more connected Tosh - with your guitar, your lyrics, the melody. You play with your whole body, there's a groove that you play within. You've shifted out of your head and into the music. Your beautiful rich bass ... aaaaah

I hear and see a real shift here. Well done!

You actually managed to describe exactly how I felt, though I'm not sure I could have put it into words as eloquently as you did. Thank you!

Nice performance. And you sound so comfortable Tosh! Bass note strumming sounds really good too.

Excellent, Tosh, I'd say one of your best performances.

Strumming with the bass note was smooth and clean throughout.  Your tone and phrasing is is just great (makes me jealous, I recall struggling to fit the words to the strumming...maybe time to try again as you did).  And the ending was great.

Recording wise, quality was excellent.  Guitar sounded fabulous.  And your singing sat just right.

So whatever you've done here ... keep doing it !!

That kind of folk bass line strumming is something I really struggle with. Yet you do it with so much ease as well as sing along amazingly well! You’re awesome Johnny Cash Tosh! (That has a ring to it!)

Thanks a lot, David. Would love to see you attack this song again and see what you come up with.

You mentioned the recording quality. Really nothing different except I didn't add any reverb within the DAW. Definitely agree this is better. Thanks!

Very good Tosh. It's a tough one to sing and play. I can't make it all the way through with no mistakes like that good job. Are you going to try the key changing version? It's tough but fun and great practice.

Tosh, excellent work my friend. I won’t got on about the potential for tribute act income again (oops, can’t stop thinking it though  ;D). A fine performance, you’re looking really comfortable with the guitar, I guess that comes with time playing and holding the instrument. Yet again you’ve filmed “live” and not fluffed. Your not looking at the guitar much, if at all, which is a measure of progress in my book. Really enjoy your performances.

Hey Garfield - I actually have played and recorded the version with key changes. It took me a long time to remember which key goes with which verse, but now I've got the hang of it. I actually prefer playing this simplified version better though, as it matches up with my voice a bit more naturally. Now I see why he did that little hum before each verse. It's definitely tricky starting out singing each verse in a different key. Cool trick though!
