Opinions on Ibanez AR720FM-BSQ and ASV93 TDL
« on: November 14, 2018, 01:47:36 pm »
Hi,
I primarily play acoustic guitar and also have a Casino Coupe. I fancy getting into the electric guitar a bit more and have been looking around to see whats about. I came across an Ibanez  AR720FM-BSQ and ASV93 TDL which are greatly reduced at the mo. on GAK. I really like the look of the ASV93 but don't know if this would be too much like my Casino Coupe, also being female, I'm  not sure how I would get on size wise although looking at the dimensions, it doesn't seem to bad. I play all sorts of music rock, blues, folk (!) so kind of need an all rounder. My budget is around £500. If anyone has an opinion on these or any other suggestions, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

The AR720FM-BSQ would get my vote as like you said the ASV93 TDL is too much like your Casino coupe, another consideration could be the Yamaha Revstar range with choices of P90’s or Humbuckers available, my only reservation with them is being Mahogany with a maple cap would be weight they will be heavier (I think) than the Ash body AR720FM-BSQ.
This youngster plays one so I would have thought that you would be ok

My singing sucks so I’m learning Guitar and Ukulele, it’s fun 🌟

The ASV93 looks really nice. I'm not sure about the aged hardware but that 3-tone fade is pretty. The old Vintage Ibanez models from a couple of years ago had a faked relic-effect on the body too and I didn't like it much. I think the ASV93 is more subtle. The other alternative would be the non-vintage AS93, the only difference is the colour and you get gold plated hardware instead of the aged hardware look. Price is about the same. The violin burst is the real classic Ibanez hollow-body look.

Compared to the Casino Coupe, the AS line has a slightly larger body. The Coupe body is 14.25" wide by 17", whereas the AS models are 15.75" wide by 19.25" high. So more like the Epiphone Dot or ES-335 size, a smidgen smaller. Ibanez used to have an AM range (models like AM93) too that is smaller, around the same size as the Coupe or ES-339, but I think it's mostly discontinued now, at least in Europe. I've only seen the AM53 lately, and that's a stripped-down inexpensive model. I digress. The ASV93 has a center block, so it's not completely hollow like the Coupe. May not produce as much feedback but also not quite as resonant. The ASV93 pickups are Ibanez's "Super 58 Alnico" humbuckers which will have a fatter sound compared to the P90s on the Casino Coupe. I think both sound really good though.

The AR720FM is a solid-body so might feel heavier than the Coupe. The size is more like the Coupe. The pickups are Ibanez's Super 80 humbuckers, which on that model have coil-splitting I think. That gives you more tones, but coil splitting can sometimes be a bit of a gimmick.

You know your real problem here? It's that whichever you end up getting, you'll want the other one later too! ;D

Thank you very much for your replies, I will have a look at the other Yamaha Revstar as well, does look vey nice! Thanks plywood for all the useful info, this helps loads as well. It would be lovely to see these in the flesh, but there are no decent music shops around where I live! Thanks again for your help, I will let you know which one I go for :-)
