Proximity of guitars to heater banks
« on: September 29, 2018, 01:32:32 am »
Hello, I live in New York City, where winters are very dry and we have baseboard heating (ie electric radiator type installed along the bottom of the wall)

Currently my guitars (1 acoustic, solid-body electric) are wall mounted, but about 1 ft away from the edge of the heater banks. Should I relocate the mountains before the heating comes on this winter?  If so, any guidelines for where to mount them, how far away from heater banks etc.  TIA.

It's not how far away your guitars are it's how dry the air gets when the
heat is on. Do yourself a favor and get a hygrometer to check the
Relative Humidity and get a humidifier if it is consistently below 40%.
I'd feel a little better if my guitars where more than a foot away from a
heat source. You'll get people telling you to put yiur guitars in their cases
in the winter with a in case humidifier. But if you want your guitars out on
hangers or stands they will be fine as long as you house is around 40% RH
My guitars have been out on wall hangers and stand for about 20 years all
year long in dry winter with a home humidifier and never had a problem.
