Pickguard on Justin’s guitar

Hi. I’ve been looking at Justin’s video lesson on ‘Nowegian Wood’ and am intrigued by his pickguard. Is it a homemade addition or a very worn original? If homemade should we all be adding one to protect our instruments? Any thoughts?

Played a Framus 5/50 Calypso Archtop 1968-72. Then life got in the way. Don’t know where that guitar or the years went!

Justin used to have acrylic nails and they would click on the pick guard
so he covered it with felt. He no longer uses acrylic nails.
