Bargin DI: BEHRINGER U-PHORIA UMC22
« on: May 17, 2018, 05:15:13 pm »
Wow, what a bargain for about $40 US! Two inputs, crazy:

Add a bargain microphone, cable & stand, and I would be all set for $100 US.
Anyone with direct experience with this DI?

That looks like very good value for money.

While I stress that I have no experience of this particular product I am a satisfied user of Behringer kit and have been for some time.

At the moment I have a Behringer mixer and several of their condenser mics which are also good value for money.

I know a lot of folk are rather sniffy about Behringer - probably because of the price point -but my experience has been good. And there is such a thing as brand snobbery!

No snobbery here. I hate paying through the nose for stuff. I'm not recording Fleetwood Mac anytime soon -- right where the dog sleeps (my "music room"). BTW, I do have my eye on the Behringer Ultravoice Xm8500 microphone.

Seems to get good reviews.
Has 2 channels so can do mic and guitar at same time. Plenty to start learning about recording.

I have used those and they are pretty good. Perhaps not up to Shure SM58 standard but they are a fraction of the price.

A small note: I wouldn't call this a "DI", I would call it an audio interface. A DI is normally a "DI box" which is a separate analogue unit which sits between the instrument and the audio-interface or desk and does things like signal splitting, unbalanced to balanced signal conversion, and impedance matching.

OK, then I won't either. :)
The audio interface unit I listed at the top is only 16bit. That puts it well below competing with 24bit boxes like the Focusrite. The 24bit Behringer box is still a bargain at $60 US:

Speaking of DIs, you can get a cheap but decent passive one from Berhinger as well, the DI600P.
It's about £28 here, and I'm sure you'll find it for less than $30 in the US.

I purchased a Behringer USB UCG102 interface for my PC. It allows you to plug in your guitar and use your PC to record anything played on the guitar. And it had a headphone jack to keep things quiet to avoid annoying the neighbors.

I am a linux user and I have been experimenting with the software packages to see what can be accomplished with recording the guitar.

@bjsteeves, I am connecting directly from my amp (Mustang I) to my PC using a USB connection right now. It works fine. The audio interface would allow me to add a microphone among other things.

To bring this full circle, I decided to go with the Behringer U-Phoria UMC204HD. It seemed like the best blend of expandability, flexibility, 24-bit support and overall value. I'm putting it through its paces on my CT Road Cases thread.

I may indeed get a DI box yet. Makes sense to be able to run an XLR line to the audio interface (or mixer) and a line out to an amp.
