Wow Mrs B that is looking really cool. By your narrative Pete sounds like true artist who really cares for his work, not just banging out instruments as quick as he can. Seems a very Zen like approach. And you both look good together, anyone would have thought it was made for you  ;)

Can't wait to see the next stage. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers

In two more sleeps I'll have my new new guitar  :) :) :) :)

Pete has been delayed by the high humidity which prevented him from spraying the protective layers. He's fine tuning the details eg tweaking the hand carved bone bridge and nut etc and giving it 'a chance to settle in'.

He said he's so pleased with it he might keep it for himself and make me another one  ;D ;D ;D

I'm mildly excited.  ;)

He sent me these

Yesterday was the day my guitar was ready for me. The mild excitement  :D  I'd been feeling woke me at 4.30am. I knew I'd be emotional but had no idea of the intensity of my reaction. Pete led me to where he had my guitar waiting for me. Tears sprang to my eyes as he picked it up, then more tears began to trickle down my face as he played the first sounds. I'm tearing up as I remember.

What a piece of art and beauty.

The question you're asking? How does she sound?

The guitar has surpassed my dreams.

Big, rich, warm bass, glorious mid range equally rich and full and treble that lifts my spirits to the sky, bright and sparkling. All beautifully balanced. Fantastic sustain.  The guitar has a responsiveness that I can only describe as it feeling alive.

Some of the construction details that brought more tears to my eyes as I marveled the loving attention to detail Pete has given this guitar. He knows I love gold fittings as that was my choice of tuners, so he sourced a gold strap pin for the neck end. He put in a chrome strap pin/pick up input as a temporary measure till he sources a gold version for the other end.

He used tortoiseshell bridge pins to echo the tortoiseshell pick guard. Inside the guitar is a label that has my name on it and the date it was finished. This guitar is the 20th he has made of this model.

Pete put slightly heavier strings on than the 11 - 52 range that I use. He used Elixir Nanoweb 12 - 53 because they enriched the tone. They feel good. The neck feels like a part of me.

He uses beeswax on the soundboard as it gives a vibrancy to the sound. He explained that as an organic material it blends with the timber and gives the soundboard more freedom to flex.  The rest of the guitar is finished with a satin finish. The fret wires are a thicker gauge so that I'll get at least 5 years out of them before needing to have them dressed.

The guitar timbers feel like silk, so finely has Pete finished them. He told me the grade of the finest sandpaper he uses but I was too besotted to listen properly.

Pete was a shipwright as a younger man, so wanted to send my new guitar off with a ceremony. We didn't smash a bottle of Veuve Clicquot  on her hull. Instead he played this lovely song Pass It Along by Scott Cook. Yes I bawled, a lot.

This guitar came from a timber, from the body of a tree
Through the workshop of a luthier, now it's on loan to me
And it's good company after dinner, and it fits my hands just fine
But some day another singer with a pair of hands like mine
Will coax out songs much prettier still hiding in its strings
And sing stronger, braver words than I could ever sing
And folks are gonna love it, of this I'm almost sure
So I'll take good care of it, cause I'm borrowing it from her

Pass it along, pass it along
May it land in careful hands when we're gone
You carry it for a moment
But time won't loan it to you for long
You don't own it, pass it along.

Once I get the video edited, I'll post a copy. Till then, here's a very happy batwoman with her new guitar.

Thankyou Darrell, you're right, this guitar will be treasured by me. I've also made arrangements in my will that the guitar goes back to Pete so he can pass it on.

Something he told me yesterday that brought more tears to my eyes is that creating this guitar has been the most joyful and pleasurable of all the guitars he has made. That shows in the quality of his work and the sound it makes. I'm still discovering sounds and textures and characteristics. Things to delight me.  Much like you with your new grandbaby  perhaps?

That’s a testimony to his passion as a luthier, there’s a very special connection there!
Yes having a new Grand daughter has been very special for me just now, it’s so joyful 💕💖💕
