001 2018 - Emotions Ring
« on: January 11, 2018, 03:31:24 pm »
Happy New Year to all. I've not been very active due to work/family commitments but pleased to see that the comp has resumed in 2018. I happen to have a song ready that I've been working on for a while. The song is a cover of The Ocean Blue's "Emotions Ring" continuing my habit of listening to and covering obscure indie bands. As usual I've tried to keep as closely as possible to the original. It was unusually tough for this song given the loose, ambient nature of the recording and the perverse need to be fairly accurate with the fretting. This meant I had to repeat many of the tracks before I was satisfied. The song is melodic, but also a bit jazzy which meant the vocal is almost another instrument so that was challenging too. Anyway I hope you like it and if so, have a listen to the vastly superior original which is on YouTube.

Very nice!

Not a band - or song - that I've heard before.

Good playing and the vocals work too. I like the jazzy vibe.

This is really really good, Neil, very well done, I'm really impressed. I don't know this obscure indie band either, but I love the song. Guitars, vocals, percussion, everything is done really well.  I did go and listen to the original, and I would still say that I quite enjoyed your cover. One of the things that impresses me the most is that you transcribe everything yourself. I'm getting to the point where I can learn what I want to play if I have a good lesson to follow, although it might take me some time especially if speed is involved, but I'm very very new to transcribing so I'm a long way from being able to transcribe an entire song myself. So great job, really enjoyed this.

That was excellent - I'd not heard of The Ocean Blue either but just spent far too long listening to their tracks on YouTube.

Fourtwo - you are harmful to my guitar practice!

Although - watching one of their live videos - I realised that the guy was playing part of the minor pentatonic which I've been learning - I managed to work out the notes and play it so I have now transcribed for the first time!!

Mr. Bumble, thanks for the comments, appreciate it.

Mari, Thanks for the positive vibes. Until I started covering these obscure songs I hadn't really done any transcribing. As a result of my choice of music to cover, and the fact that there are no readily available lessons or even, in some cases chords or tabs, I've had to learn how to do it. It takes a lot of patience and time, but it is really rewarding and is great for musical development. Try it some time and I think you'll get a lot out of it.

sdd56 - thanks for listening, and I'm glad you liked it. I came across Ocean Blue a while ago by accident and ended up liking most of their stuff, including their recent albums (they're still recording and occasionally touring). There songs tend to be fairly simple but quite sophisticated so they're good songs to practice transcribing to.

I like the vibe of this a lot. Your voice suits the laid back feel. Thanks  :)  As one in the early stages of learnng I'm dazzled by all that you've achieved in such a seamless way.

That guitar is awesome. Love the way you hold that note and it just kinda trails off. Love the melodies. Your vocals are as good as ever. What a nice tone you have. Really cool song. Loved it.
