It seems that Len Aloise's SKYPE session sparked an inspiration in Justin:

Well I know I'm guilty of being "THAT GUY". I really got a lot out of this video and it is something I've been trying to work on. The last thing I want to do is bore the listener.

I've made a career out of boring the listener hilts and it's got me where I am today....... Nowhere
.
If I was a song writer like Len though I'd be milking that shout out for all its worth.  I'm not sure how but maybe a clickbait title like 'the man Justin guitar goes to for guitar teaching advice'...new album out now.     Before they were famous maybe,  'Len from Justin guitar reflects'

Never been bored when taking in your performances, Hilts.

LOL ... funny man, Alex ... likewise, never bored by any of your videos.  And one day I'd love to be able to just be ready to try to play the songs you've shared with us the way you play them ...

Sorry folks - Justin is taking his time getting to this due to a hectic schedule.
He has asked us to pass on his apologies.
:)

Another sorry for the lengthy delay.
Lieven and I do remind Justin but he does seem to be extraordinarily busy - with some things that won't be obvious for a little while yet.
I shall give him a gentle nudge again today - but he has been locked away in a guitar workshop all week.

I'd rather get proper feedback than have him rush.

I'm interested on that topic, how DO you judge entries? Do you listen through once and take notes, or listen a few times with headphones in a dark room to catch every nuance? Critical listening isn't something I have any practice with.

On the first point - Thanks John. It is a fair point and I'm sure many will agree.

On the second point - for me personally ...

I listen to all entries as they are uploaded just for pleasure.
I usually do not comment in any way at that time - maybe just a short, positive comment of thanks and encouragement for the person submitting an entry and something saying how I enjoyed it.

At the close of the competition entry period, I set aside several hours - usually on a weekend morning or an evening.
I listen through headphones and listen to each entry multiple times. If there is a video I make a point of trying to listen and watch separately and together. This gives me a chance to 'hear' the recording and also to look for technical points that I can then comment on and provide feedback for improvement (or feedback for congratulations and well-dones).
In terms of arriving at my choice(s) for winner & honourable mentions, there is no objective, set list of criterion that I look to use. It is mainly based on instinct, appreciation for overall effort, improvement of some kind, general performance or for having displayed a particular skill.

Also informing my choices can sometimes be thoughts such as - who has tried to play something / do something / perform something in such valiant manner that with expert guidance and the benefit of a Skype with Justin, could move to a whole new level of playing?

I speak only for myself.
Lieven and Justin may operate slightly differently and having different judging rationale and methods.

That's really interesting.

It can't be easy to judge when you have experienced musicians against novices putting their soul open for inspection (at least that's how I felt when I first started posting recordings).

Thanks for the insight and the time you (and the others) put in.
