Another impressive update to your RC David. Disappointingly short compared to your September epistle though. (I didn’t quite manage to finish my sandwich this time 😂).

I for one think you’ve achieved a huge amount in your almost 5 years of playing. You sum it up well when you say it’s a joy to learn to play and sing, not a race. In my 3 1/2 years on this forum I’ve seen names come and go. Perhaps some have gone on to learn using a different online tutor or system but I suspect many have given up totally when the overnight guitar god dream didn’t materialise.

Here’s to the next 5 years!

Thanks Gordon.  Sandwich length ... something to aspire to  ;D  And I'll join you in a wee dram to look forward to the next 5 or 3.5 years!

Another interesting read David. Thanks for sharing.

I wonder if the brain adapts and that is why you are finding the remembering of songs easier?  Your brain is saying, this is what you do, so this is what I'll do, if you know what I mean?

Thanks Stefan. I think you are right. I'm no expert but do believe that neural plasticity allows our brains to develop new pathways as we focus and learn new things. And I believe the science says this is a life-long thing. So keep using the brain and learning and you'll continue to be able to learn.  One of the many positive benefits of the musical hobby.

Those are some impressive lists of recordings that show a lot of development and growth. Your industry with recording makes me realize how lax I've been.

Thanks JWC.

I am not sure I'd consider you to be lax.  I've no idea what you get up to musically on a regular basis, just a vague sense based on things you share here.

For me, the last few years has been (and continues to be) about learning and mastering the foundation. And as we always say here, learning and playing songs is what it is all about. Doing that all alone at home is challenging (for me). So recordings served to provide the feedback and encouragement that I might have got in other ways.

So it served me. I am sure you do plenty that serves you. Though more recordings from you would be a treat. That moment in time when you shared a number was fabulous. Such a joy to listen to you play and sing plus share all the details about the recordings.

Well, maybe not lax overall, but definitely lax about recording stuff (and even participating, here, for that matter). Life happens and all that. I've been feeling the itch to record again, though.

Guess it is all about choices as to how we spend the time we have. Your contributions to the Forum are always valuable, be it in answers to questions or sharing recordings.  But as you say, just a part of life.

I admire your approach to learning David.  Lots of enthusiasm and a love for what you are doing.  I'm sure this attitude will get you a long way with your playing and is a great example for us.

Thanks Skeldol. I appreciate it, though I probably lean a little too far towards playing and having fun versus disciplined, deliberate practice, which will influence rate at which I improve my play-grade.

That approach sounds good to me David!

It serves me, but then I am not super driven to raise my play-grade and shift from advancing (consolidating) beginner to genuine intermediate player. And I am in reasonable control of wishfulness that may be fueled watching those in the Forum who appear to me to be more advanced than myself, making more progress, faster . Happy toddling along at tortoise pace, watching the hares.

As long as you are enjoying yourself and picking up the guitar, that's what matters.  You are clearly enjoying the journey.  👍

I like this idea of categories for songs  (campfire, developing and dreamer). Its a good way to see your progress and tailor your practice sessions.
How often do you practice the songs in your campfire list?

Thanks RFW. I am totally unstructured so I really couldn't say how often I play the campfire repertoire. I normally play songs as part of every practice session, either campfire or developers. And when an Open Mic is approaching then I focus on those songs.
