Hey Tosh. Just by chance I recorded an old Johnny Cash concert that was on TV at the weekend and am watching it tonight. I’d never noticed before but he does a lot of strumming down the neck. If you copy that you’ll wear the ‘CASH’ off your new guitar!

Thanks to everybody for commenting on the Cash guitar in my other thread. That conversation helped me to process the thoughts and opinions I was already having.

I ultimately decided to return this t for two reasons:

1) shape - I found the dreadnought a bit unwieldy and uncomfortable, so that likely was a lot of the problem

2) tone - there was a weird plasticky sound. It would be fine for a $200 guitar. But for the price I just found it difficult to justify

I found this, for an even exchange and loved it almost instantly!
Martin 000-X2E

It’s still a Martin X series (Made in Mexico) but has significant improvements in its specs over the Cash guitar that really come through when playing it:

Solid Sitka Spruce top - The Cash was all laminate

The top also has a hand rubbed finish. Nice and thin, very minimalistic. They say the color will nicely darken over time to match the shade of the back and sides. Will be interesting to see if that’s true

Bridge, fingerboard and neck on the new 000 are made of hardwood. They call it “select hardwood”, which I think just means “undetermined”. The Cash had richlite for all. The neck was noticeably heavier with the richlite, so this seems like another good upgrade. None of this would matter of it didn’t sound and feel better, but it does. I’m a happy guy!

Looks great Tosh, happy NGD! I would love to now hear the same song you played on your Cash guitar to compare the tones and sounds getting out of your new beauty, it would be quite an interesting thing to hear and compare

Nice one Tosh, happy NGD that’s a size I like too the OOO size is a great compromise if you don’t like the size of a Dreadnought. The HPL guitar I linked to is more like the right price for that construction,Martin guitars to an extent, especially the lower end models are well and truly overpriced! Looking forward to hearing it!

Melody Music Shop in Bloomington. The sole remaining guitar store in B-Town, as Vance closed down earlier this year. I have bought guitars at Guitar Center in Greenwood too.

It was sad to see Vance close. I bought my Taylor there during the 'going out of business sale'. MMS carries a good inventory. Bought my G&L ASAT Classic Bluesboy Tribute second hand at the GC in Greenwood.

Nice. Yeah, I was sorry to see Vance close too. I bought three guitars from them, two of which I still have (My Taylor and Standard (MIM) Telecaster). Good family run business.

Sweet guitar!

Having several guitars myself, I love how they give you a different kind of inspiration and playing style every time. Even though I prefered one over the other some times, you'll be surprised how hard to compare they become after a while when it comes to emotional value.

The new house is done and we are all moved in. Whoop whoop! Now I can get back to the important things in life...like guitar, of course. I can see my wife peering at me from across the room. As if she knows I’m typing this. Haha.

Anyway, just thought I’d share.

On the guitar front, since this is a roadcase, after all: I do have a few guitar goals for 2021, inspired by Batwoman, and others:

1) I would really like to finish the Intermediate Method (starting back at foundation I)

2) continue to build my busking / farmers market repertoire - though who knows if I’ll actually get any public playing until the pandemic really gets under control. Safety first, right?

I see my ultimate playlist consisting of a lot of the following:

Johnny Cash
Beatles
CCR
Bob Dylan
John Prine
Willie Nelson

3) write and record at least 3 new original songs

Wow a whooping house indeed, congratulations Tosh, hope you will apend there many happy years. I remember you were looking for some suggestions for your music room and what can you do during construction phase to make your life easier once you move in - what did you end up.with eventually unless you are still preping up interior bits?

I am really keen to see your progress this year and I hope there will be some birds singing in the background while you are jamming on your porch

Tosh, that's wonderful news.

Wish you and your family happy living in your new home. When you get time would love some photos of that planned music room.

Goals and plans for the year look great; wish you well on those.

Fine set of artists from whom you'll draw your repertoire.

I guess selecting songs for busking is tricky as you don't necessarily know who the audience may be. I'd figure then that you need songs that are "classic" and likely well known to many or really catchy to grab people's attentions.

Look forward to hearing more from you repertoire and original songs.
