Couple of questions, just to be clear ..

and in your video or audio, you will tell us WHY this song makes you this happy.

Simple rules once again:
- No collabs, no backingtrack; just the pure you and your music.
Do you litarally want a narration added onto the song file or is it ok to explain it in the contest entry post?

On backing tracks I understand that using a digital instrument programmed via midi is fine. My drum sim has some preset grooves or fills that can be used to build up a full drum track. That is not a downloaded third party backing track by the original definition. So would creating a drum track using the grooves be within rules?

Don't want to inadvertently get myself disqualified...

Song picked — just need to learn it I agree with David. Would be good to know if we really need to explain in the audio or video why this song makes us happy. That seems a little awkward for some formats

Sorry for th delay - this question slipped under my radar.

For clarity:

Explain the 'happy factor' in whatever way suits your story and that you are comfortable with.
In a written post. To camera. On audio. With photographs. It's all good.

David
Your drum-sim grooves are fine and I look forward to hearing them!

 :)

ANNOUNCEMENT for OCT-NOV-DEC

For the final competition period of 2018 the competition is opened out in the following way:

For the first time the competition is not limited to single-person entries.
In fact the opposite.
We are looking for instrumental only recordings (no vocals required) that must be collaborations between two or more forum members.

Please record a tune / melody / song that is seasonal / festive and submit before the closing deadline of Sunday 16th December.

Entries must be a festive / seasonal / Christmas tune recorded as a collaboration between two or more forum members

And watch out for an announcement on some slightly different, cool and fab prizes. ;)

Is it just a case of an people to collaborate or are you helping us get hooked up at all?

Also are vocals banned, or just not required?

To put myself out there, I am available as rhythm or bass player or vocalist if permitted. I can do basic production (garage band)

We are seeking instrumentals … not vocals.

Collaborators need to contact each other.
We have had a lot of great collabs recently so there is already a good slice of networking that some will be able to draw on.
For anyone wanting to get involved but has not yet done any collabs then do what John256 has done ... let it be known who you are, what you can do, what you can bring to the table and so on.

Can I suggest that you do this in the new thread I have made here:

It seems a weird time of year to not have vocals, when Christmas songs generally are about sharing a message (whether Christian or not). I can stand a finger-style rendition of Silent Night but who wants to hear an instrumental version of Slade?!

Heigh ho. Just my £0.02 - instrumentals are a great idea generally and I like the collaboration idea.

Ha ha … perhaps no one.

If they do maybe a condensed 'verse chorus' only version to save us!!! :)

We didn't say we were making this easy :)

good comment on the "vocal <-> Christmas message" thing.

On the other end I could add that there is a LOT of instrumental only versions of christmas songs out there that could serve as inspiration.

no rule said you can't try new stuff.
No rule said it has to be only guitar.
no rule said you can't experiment with the genre.

what woudl happen if Hendrix felt like a reindeer or Megadeth took a shot at little drummer boy?
What would happen if Rodrigo & Gabriela made "silent night" feel a lot more Spanish?

And yes, keep an eye out for some cool prizes 8)

Cool idea!
Never done a long distance collaboration in my life. It is possible that I never will :o but I look forward to hearing this round's entries.

Put your name forward in the mix Fox.
You play bass, guitar, drum machine, can record & mix.

Does no vocals mean no use of the human voice?

For example would Hocus Pocus by Focus not count as an instrumental under the rules?

For those who haven't heard it,

Looking forward to having some fun with Lynn on this.
