I seem to recall we discussed limiting it to 'one win per year' when we were figuring out the rules.
I will have to check through previous notes etc.
If / when I find something I'll get back.

I am sort of thinking the worst entry each month should get the benefit of a lesson as that is who needs it most.

I would suggest a slight rethink. How about if the "reward" for winning was kudos and prominence in the web site - a headline and link to the song say. Whoever "wins" would not be forbidden from winning again. Instead Justin and team could also nominate a "special mention" song/contributor who could win one of the existing prizes. Just an idea since, for me anyway, the kudos would be worth as much, or more, than the material prize and it would take away the incentive for people not to contribute of they won previously.

If I may be permitted to add my tuppence worth here as someone who "almost" won in month 1 and who is therefore embargoed from winning again for a year (I think).

For me, the essence of the competition is the focus it brings to producing a work that represents where I am right now in my skill set *as a performer*. What is great about the competition is the support and encouragement we get and give. It's like being at a really friendly open mic.

Strangely, I think the competitive element is important because it provides an *edge* that focuses the mind but actually, I get most from the discipline of having to put a complete piece of work together and then submitting it for critique as a performance.

And interestingly, the guitar technique is only a part of the performance which also includes recording, arrangement, interpretation, etc... and all of these are relative to our current level of skill in each area.

So imho it's best if the rules are kept as simple as possible and the judges have freedom to exercise their discretion based on how they see the performer.

David, you can still enter.
Only the winning entrants come under that ruling.

In October ...

Entries must be a lead guitar solo / improvisation over a JustinGuitar Backing Track

Entries must be no more than two minutes in duration.
Make them shorter if you want. Whatever it takes for you to make your statement. Focus on quality over quantity, expression over duration.

Entries must be played over one of two free-to-download backing tracks from Really Useful Play Along Tracks

Track One

12 Bar Blues in A

Get stuck in to that A minor pentatonic / A Blues Scale bag of licks & tricks.

Track Two

Acoustic Pop in G Major

Here are some handy hints and analysis for the G Major track if you want / need them.

Song structure:

Section A:   G  / / /   Gmaj7 / / /   C / / /     D / / /

Section B:   Em / / /   Bm / / /      D / / /     Am / / /

Section C:   C / / /    C/B / / /     C6/A / / /  C/G  / / /

Time               Section
00:00              two-beat drum intro
00:02              A x2 intro (single strums)
00:25              A x4
01:06              B x4
01:51              A x4
02:33              B x4
03:17              C x4
03:58              B x4
04:43              B x1 outro

For soloing:

G Major throughout - be careful of any 'sour' notes though ...

Or ... for the adventurous ...

Section A - G Major (or G Maj Pentatonic)
Section B - E Aeolian (or E Min Pentatonic)
Section C - C Lydian (or C Maj Pentatonic) - emphasise notes C, D, E, G

REMEMBER :

No more than 2 minutes.

This special edition of the competition starts on the 1st of October and your last day to enter is the 31st.

Good luck!

In November / December ...

Entries must be a festive / seasonal / Christmas song

The general competition rules still stand. The recording must be a solo performance although multi-track entries are fine.

NOTE:

The duration and dates are different.
Entries can be submitted from Saturday 18th November and the deadline is Sunday 10th December.

This is to contain it to a time period not so early that we moan and groan at the premature festive melodies (ha ha) and yet not too late that there is no time for listening, commenting, judging and awarding prizes etc before 25th December itself.

NOTE:

The prizes will be different too.

There will be no SKYPE lesson as prize. Instead, Justin will be sending some JustinGuitar Goodies and Vouchers ... hopefully in time to put in your Santa Sack!

Enjoy and good luck!

Are we allowed to change the tempo of the backing tracks?
My singing sucks so I’m learning Guitar and Ukulele, it’s fun 🌟

There's always one isn't there!!!

You think you've got all bases covered.
All firmed up.
All the ts crossed and the is dotted.
Then along comes Mr Awkward with his 'yeah, but can I do this' desire to bend the rules!

 ;) ;)

Ha ha

Just kidding.

I haven't confirmed but I'm sure that will be fine.

G Major track: it seems like it's going to be tough to include Section C, which kicks in at 3:17?
Einstein's theory of relativity might help here
