Problem with a student's fingers that I don't know how to fix
« on: December 26, 2017, 11:20:52 pm »
I have been trying to teach a friend guitar and he has this problem where his fingers bend inwards

I've never come across it before and I'm not sure what to do.

Hey hello and welcome to the community.

Could you be somewhat more specific? From what i've read, it seems only natural that fingers bend inwards. Especially going towards the high e.

So a bit more information would go a long way.

(Ok, so i've had a look on Google. could it be possible that the fingers are crooked? That they bend towards the other fingers?)

Thx in advance!
I'll get it in the end. Just don't give up, that's the key....

Oh yes sorry. So his 2nd and 3rd finger just seem to slide towards each other and even if you pry them apart into the proper position they just slide back.

Mine do that as well. I seem to remember a picture when you first posted this. It looked similar to mine. Fairly normal I think - it's advanced guitarists who have the weird shaped hands  ;D

Yours may well have been similar when you first started. My stretch is getting better now, its just takes time. Justin's Basic Finger Workout in stage 3 will help.
Started BC Sept 2016, currently on stage 8.

I have this problem with my little finger/pinkie and it’s a big challenge. E.g. If I play an Am7 where it’s positioned on the 3rd fret, 1st string it’s a difficult stretch and it collapses outward making it difficult to apply the pressure needed for the note to sound true.
I’ve even thought of looking into surgery

Thanks for the replies. I'll just have to encourage him to keep trying. :)
